BANGOR – Illness and injury to a pair of regular starters gave several other members of the Bangor girls basketball team a chance to show off their offense and defense as the Rams posted a 71-40 victory over Old Town Friday night at Red Barry Gymnasium.

Four Ram players put up double figures in scoring, including Erin Porter’s 13 points, as senior Caroline Weymouth (sprained ankle) and junior Serena Dubois (illness) played limited minutes.

“We were really concerned how much they would be able to play because they’ve been two keys for us, but it was really one of those games where everyone just came through,” said coach Tom Tennett, whose Rams go to 9-1 and haven’t lost a game since Jan. 7.

Facing Old Town’s 2-3 zone, the taller Rams had a little trouble working their inside game early. But that just meant more chances for Bangor’s shooters, who were 5-for-15 from 3-point range in the first half.

Noelle Lincoln (11 points) hit three of those, including one at the first-quarter buzzer to give the Rams an 18-8 lead.

“It was Bangor’s night,” Old Town coach Justin Page said. “They must have shot over 50 percent in the first three quarters, and what do you do against that? Our kids were contesting, trying to work at it, but when they hit those perimeter shots it kind of buried us early.”

Tennett said he could sense his shooters would be on target for the game after Lincoln, Porter and senior Amanda Webb couldn’t miss in practice.

“We’ve been working on [playing against the zone] in practice,” said Webb, who hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter and made six against Old Town in the teams’ first meeting this season, a 60-52 Bangor win on Dec. 17.

“We’ve been working on rotating the ball so we can kick it back to the wings and get us open,” she added.

Porter scored 11 points in the first half and finished with eight rebounds. Lincoln put in nine points in the first half. Curtis had seven of her 11 points in third quarter and Tawnya Godinez scored eight of her 10 in the fourth quarter.

“We realized that everyone needed to step it up and everyone had a role they needed to play,” Curtis said. “Tonight we went out on to the court and all played 100 percent, and it showed.”

Alyssa Ogden helped out with a game-high 10 rebounds.

Along with the Rams’ typical scoring balance, Bangor also played its tough brand of zone defense.

Old Town’s Katie Bergeron, who scored 27 points against the Rams’ man-to-man defense in December, was limited to four points Friday. This time Bangor played a 1-3-1 zone.

“We took away the middle so she couldn’t drive to the basket,” Curtis said. “She did that over and over [in the first game]. So we knew we had to step up into the lane and take that away.”

The Indians (2-9) got nine points from Jenny Jones and eight from Amy McLaughlin. Bergeron had six rebounds.
