LINCOLN – A wood stove fire damaged a Weatherbee Point Road camp early Sunday morning and caused a transportation headache for firefighters trying to get to the remote location.

Ice fishermen staying at the camp were awakened at 2:30 a.m. by the fire, an official from the Lincoln Fire Department said.

No injuries were reported from the blaze, which burned a wall of the camp.

While waiting for help to arrive, the unidentified fishermen used two fire extinguishers and snow to dampen the flames.

Firefighters took two pump trucks and two tanker trucks to the camp at the head of Mattanawcook Lake and reported having trouble negotiating the several miles of plowed, but unsanded, camp road.

“It’s narrow enough in the summertime and twice as much so in the winter,” the official said.

Unable to travel the unplowed camp access road with their vehicles, firefighters ran water hose “a couple hundred yards” to the camp, the official estimated.

Crews finally cleared the fire scene at 4:30 a.m.
