Pupils raise $3,000 for tsunami victims Spirit of caring thrives at Reeds Brook

HAMPDEN – Reeds Brook Middle School pupils, staff and parents showed their spirit of caring in the aftermath of the tsunamis in Southeast Asia.

The staff came up with the idea of putting together an auction that would include the idea of giving and receiving from the holidays, and the reflection on all that Americans have versus the destruction in Asia.

Pupils were asked to think of what they didn’t use or want anymore, from DVDs, videos and CDs to games, toys and stuffed animals. They brought in more than 300 items and auctioned them off to their classmates.

Auctions were held in each grade level, with a silent auction for one-of-a-kind premium items.

Mr. Crooker, math teacher and assistant principal, was the auctioneer, with help from the student council and civil rights team.

The school raised more than $3,000 in support of tsunami relief efforts. Proceeds will be sent to Save the Children and UNICEF.
