ROCKLAND – Details are still emerging in the shooting death of a woman said to be involved in an extramarital affair with her killer.

On Friday, Douglas Dyer, 31, of Friendship turned himself in to Waldoboro police at about 4:30 p.m. after fleeing the scene of the shooting on New County Road in Rockland.

Police say Dyer shot and killed Allison Small, 30, of Vinalhaven shortly after meeting with Small and her husband, Brandon Small, 28. The meeting was to end a romantic relationship between Dyer and Allison Small, police said.

Dyer was employed by the Smalls as a driver at their business, Vinalhaven Transportation Inc.

Dyer was charged with murder. He is expected to make an initial appearance in 6th District Court in Rockland today.

Law enforcement officers from several agencies sought Dyer for several hours after the shooting.

Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said Sunday that Dyer had parked his truck at a roller rink shortly after the shooting and was driven around the area by a friend. The friend drove Dyer to the Waldoboro Police Department, where Dyer turned himself in to police.

Dyer knew one of the officers in Waldoboro, McCausland said.

An autopsy on Small has been completed, he said, with the cause of death linked to the shooting. The business was searched Friday, and Dyer’s truck has been seized and will be examined today at the state crime lab.

Police reported Friday that Dyer also shot at Small’s husband, but missed.

McCausland would not comment on what led to the shooting, or whether Dyer had confessed.

“The sequence of events and the circumstances will come with the court documents,” he said.
