LNG misinformation

I was moved by the op-ed piece, “Native concerns about LNG, Quoddy Bay LLC” (BDN, Jan. 24), by Vera Francis of the Passamaquoddy tribe.

She said, “Our survival as indigenous people has always rested upon the shoulders, backs and hearts of native women. The sooner Savvy [the company hired to promote liquefied natural gas] et al. accept this simple fact the sooner the LNG problem gets resolved, and the sooner it will be realized that LNG-type industrial complexes are in conflict with the cultural and spiritual values of the Passamaquoddy people.”

Our government talks about extending freedom to other peoples in other lands yet our state government would carry out cultural genocide at Pleasant Point, home of the Passamaquoddy and home too for the people of Eastport, Perry, Campobello Island, Deer Island and all the communities around Passamaquoddy Bay.

If you go to the Quoddy LNG Web site put up by Savvy you will find it full of misinformation. The government and corporations think we who share this planet are ignorant.

In her last paragraph Francis said: “If nothing else let all those now posturing to profit at our expense know that Maine’s coast will not become the national sacrifice zone.”
