BANGOR – The Greater Bangor Area NAACP will join hundreds of other branches of the civil rights organization in a National Membership Campaign, The Time is NOW, during February.
James Varner, president of the Greater Bangor Area NAACP and chairman of the membership campaign, said the effort will answer questions about what the organization is doing today to address the major problems of our times.
“I think people will be very pleased with what they hear and will want to become involved in this important work,” he said.
The campaign goal is to increase the association’s membership in order to continue to fight against policies that have put more black men in prison than in college; against educational schemes that leave black children behind; against tax cuts that starve the government, reward the wealthy and place additional burdens on the poor and the middle class; and against the marginalization of people of color in many spheres of American life.
Varner said he sees the campaign as a golden opportunity for the people of Greater Bangor to get behind the NAACP, which has done so much to benefit so many for more than 95 years.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its half-million adult and youth members throughout the United States and the world advocate for civil rights, social justice and opportunity under law.
