For many years, members of St. Aidan’s Church and volunteers from the staff of Sunrise Opportunities, both located in Machias, have hosted the annual Mardi Gras Pancake Supper to raise funds for the organization that operates several facilities in Washington County for physically and mentally challenged people.
Among other services, Sunrise Opportunities assists people in finding housing and job opportunities, learning to perform basic living tasks and in being active participants in their communities.
This year’s Mardi Gras supper is 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 8, at the Kay Parker Building, 66 Hadley Lake Road off Route 1 in Machias.
A variety of toppings and beverages are included in this all-you-can-eat meal, reports Elizabeth Schwenk of Machias, and someone will win a door prize at the end of the evening, although you do not need to be present to win.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $2.50 for children and are available at the door or in advance at St. Aidan’s Church or Woodwind Gallery.
Those toppings, by the way, include chicken, Joe Parisi sausages, strawberries with whipped cream, and creamed chicken.
With volunteers doing the work and the ingredients donated, all proceeds benefit Sunrise Opportunities.
Schwenk reminds you that your attendance at this fund-raiser could help to provide someone with a much-needed winter coat, or a much-appreciated, unexpected birthday gift.

Many people who attended Bangor High School remember Worth Noyes, a former math department head who today celebrates his 100th birthday.
“He is doing really well. He remembers people and he’s in really good health,” granddaughter Jozlyn Noyes of Brewer said.
That is why she hopes anyone who knew her grandfather will attend an open house in his honor from 3 to 4:30 p.m. today at College Center, 201 Texas Ave., next to Bangor Nursing and Rehab Center, where he resides.
The former Orrington resident is the holder of that community’s Boston Post Cane as its oldest resident.
If you cannot attend the open house for this newest centenarian, send your best wishes to him at Bangor Nursing and Rehab Center, 103 Texas Ave., Bangor 04401.
Through Thursday, Jan. 27, the Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross had responded (within 48 hours) to four separate house or apartment fires from Mars Hill to Kenduskeag, reports Jody Roberts, chapter director of emergency services.
Red Cross Emergency-Disaster Relief volunteers are working with the families to provide free assistance in the form of food, clothing and shelter, she wrote, but that is only possible because of voluntary donations of time and money made by those of us who live in eastern and northern Maine.
The Pine Tree Chapter covers all of Aroostook, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Washington and parts of Waldo counties.
To help the victims of these and other disasters, monetary contributions can be made by writing the Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross, 33 Mildred Ave., Bangor 04401, or by calling the Pine Tree Chapter at 941-2903.
Family, friends and members of the Island Falls community invite you to join them in the celebration of the 98th birthday of Clara Campbell Hathaway, during an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Island Falls Historical Society’s Tingley House.
Anyone who wants to participate in this event in any way is welcome to call Liz Clark at 463-2266.
Nancy Moore of Orrington wrote that, on her way to the dentist the last Friday in January, she had a flat tire.
While a “flat tire is one thing and the wind chill factor is quite another,” she wrote, “that day I had both.”
Along came a gentleman who urged her to get in her car and out of the wind while he, “on hands and knees” working with “frozen tools” changed the tire.
When the good deed was done, “this gentleman, refusing an offer of money, went on his way with my deepest thanks,” Moore wrote.
In Tuesday’s column I wrote about the many activities celebrating St. John’s Women’s Council 65th anniversary that begin with a rockathon at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at St. John’s Parish Hall, 207 York St. in Bangor.
Rachel Ferguson called to report that, unfortunately, the Voices of Love Choir and Sweet Adelines Heart of Maine Chorus will not be part of that event. She apologies for any disappointment this may cause.
