BANGOR – At the very least, the Bangor High girls basketball had to be disappointed after a one-point loss at Nokomis of Newport Wednesday.

The Rams took out some frustrations Friday night on Leavitt of Turner, which fell victim to the Rams’ zone press and deep bench as the Rams rolled to a 72-29 victory over the Hornets.

Even though Leavitt was 2-10 entering the game, the win still felt good for coach Tom Tennett’s Rams, who had a comeback attempt fall short in a 28-27 loss to the Warriors earlier this week.

“It was frustrating because we definitely felt like we could have beaten them but we didn’t capitalize on some opportunities,” senior captain Caroline Weymouth said of the Nokomis game. “At halftime [Friday] Coach told us we had to keep playing even if Leavitt is struggling. We had some things to work on.”

Bangor, now 11-2, got 10 points from Serena Dubois. She was the only player to finish in double figures, but with 14 of the 15 Rams scoring, it didn’t matter.

Erin Porter, Noelle Lincoln and Alyssa Ogden each chipped in with nine points. Amy Hackett and Weymouth each scored seven.

Ogden and Lincoln both came off the bench to provide sparks. Ogden had five of her nine in the first quarter, while Lincoln scored seven points in a one-minute span early in the second quarter. She hit a 3-pointer 45 seconds into the period, then made two free throws and scored off a steal for a 27-6 lead.

Later in the second Ogden made two baskets in about 50 seconds and then Hackett scored two baskets and made a free throw.

“Coach told us we had to come in and make sure we knew what we were doing and be ready to score, ready to play defense first, because the offense starts on defense,” Weymouth said.

Not much went wrong for Bangor in the first half. The Rams hit nine of their 12 free-throw attempts, went 19-for-40 from the floor, didn’t pick up their second team foul until 21/2 minutes into the second quarter, and had a 29-15 rebounding edge.

Oh, and there was also that 49-13 halftime lead.

Leavitt coach Tammy Anderson was disappointed with her team’s effort against the Rams’ 1-3-1 zone because the Hornets knew just what to expect.

“We practiced it for three days,” she said. “We’ve a young team and we’ve been inconsistent all year long and I could see right off in the body language we were in trouble. I just wanted them to get back to fundamentals, but we had trouble doing that.”

Bangor forced 15 first-half turnovers and held Stephanie Healy, one of the Hornets’ top offensive threats, to six points on 2-for-18 shooting.

The Rams outscored the Hornets 13-5 in the third quarter and used the rest of the game try to out different looks, including a man-to-man defense.

The lone Bangor player who didn’t score, freshman Allie Clukey, had a chance when she drove the lane with eight seconds left in the fourth but instead dished off to Tawyna Godinez for the final basket of the game. Godinez finished with a team-high seven rebounds.
