HANCOCK – A local man was killed and five people injured in a four-car accident Monday night on Route 1.
Police were not releasing the names of those involved. All were from the Hancock area, according to State Trooper Cliff Peterson.
The accident occurred at about 7 p.m. on Route 1 just north of the Washington Junction Road. The man who was killed had been traveling north in a full-sized pickup truck when, for an undetermined reason, he crossed the centerline, Peterson said.
The pickup truck struck three vehicles traveling south. Each of those vehicles was pushed to the side of the road; one was spun around, coming to rest facing north in the road.
There were two people in two of the southbound vehicles and another person in the third. All five were injured in the accident and taken by ambulance to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital for treatment. There was no information on the condition of the injured Monday night.
A LifeFlight helicopter was dispatched and landed at a designated landing zone on Route 1, but lifted off without picking up a patient, Peterson said.
As required by law in a fatal accident, blood alcohol tests were taken on all three drivers who survived the crash. The same test was planned for the deceased.
The state’s Medical Examiner’s office was notified and will examine the body today.
The accident closed Route 1 for about three hours. Firefighters diverted traffic around the site through Lamoine.
