Skier from Bangor hit by snowmobile in Acadia National Park

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK – A Bangor man cross-country skiing Sunday in Acadia was struck by a snowmobile but was not seriously injured, according to a park ranger.

David Edson, age unavailable, was hit by the snowmobile as he and the sled were rounding a corner on a fire road between Hodgdon Pond and Long Pond on the western side of Mount Desert Island, Acadia Park Ranger Fred Olson said Monday.

Olson had not yet confirmed the identity of the snowmobile operator and so did not release his name.

Edson was bruised on his forearms and his poles were snapped as the snowmobile came around a corner, Olson said.

“He kind of clipped the skier,” the ranger said of the snowmobile operator. “They kind of surprised each other.”

The snowmobile operator did stop to make sure Edson was OK, he said.

Snowmobiles are not allowed in the park on carriage roads, except on the eastern shore of Eagle Lake, but are allowed on fire roads and paved roads, according to Olson.

He said that everyone who uses these roads in the winter needs to be aware that other users may be nearby.

The accident remains under investigation, Olson said.
