Woman rescued from Lee fire charged with arson

BANGOR – A woman rescued a few days before Christmas from her boyfriend’s burning home in Lee was indicted Monday by the Penobscot County grand jury for arson.

April J. Avery, 45, apparently attempted suicide by setting a Christmas tree ablaze on Dec. 20 in her boyfriend’s Corbett Road home. She allegedly set the tree on fire, then called 911.

Dispatchers relayed the call to Lee firefighters who had the dispatchers telephone Forest Ranger Peter Pelletier’s office because it was closer to the fire. Pelletier and Game Warden Paul Farrington broke into the home and rescued Avery.

The home sustained heavy fire and water damage, according to firefighters

She is scheduled to be arraigned in Penobscot County Superior Court on Feb. 25. If convicted, Avery faces up to 30 years in prison.

Todd Burrill, 25, of Plymouth also was indicted Monday on seven charges of gross sexual assault. He allegedly sexually assaulted a 13-year- old girl last fall while on probation for an unrelated crime.

If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison per count.
