HANCOCK – Anthony Chick, 42, of Hancock was killed Monday night in a four-car accident on Route 1 just north of the Washington Junction Road.

Five other people were injured in the accident and one woman remained hospitalized Tuesday.

According to police reports, Chick was headed north on Route 1 at about 7 p.m. Monday when his pickup truck drifted over the centerline into oncoming traffic and struck three vehicles that were southbound.

Chick’s vehicle flipped over at least once and he was partially ejected from the pickup, which came to rest on top of him, according to state police Sgt. Jon Mahon. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Chick was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not determined why Chick’s vehicle crossed over the line, and the crash remains under investigation.

Nancy Carney, 39, of Hancock was listed in stable condition Tuesday at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth.

In addition to Carney, four other people were injured in the accident: Lawrence Meaney, 44; Preston Carney, no age given; Karen Knowlton, 44, and Dylan Knowlton, no age given, all of Hancock, were treated at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and released.

The accident closed Route 1 for more than three hours Monday night and backed up traffic for about a mile before firefighters directed traffic around the accident scene through Lamoine.
