Young Leaders Conference

BANGOR – Tessa Roscoe of Bangor has been selected to participate in the National Young Leaders Conference Feb. 22-27 in Washington. NYLC is a leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit.

The theme is “The Leaders of Tomorrow Meeting the Leaders of Today.” Roscoe and 400 other young leaders will interact with a variety of people who operate within the three branches of government, the news media and the international community.

Highlights of the conference include a role-play activity, If I Were President, and Testing the Constitution, in which the scholars examine actual Supreme Court cases. The conference culminates in the Model Congress, with scholars assuming the roles of U.S. representatives debating, amending and voting on proposed mock legislation.

Roscoe is a student at Bangor High School. She was nominated for the leadership conference by Nan Ye, who teaches Chinese in the foreign language department.

Roscoe is the daughter of Barbara Wais and Dr. Paul Roscoe of Bangor. She has been dancing with Top Hat II Dance since she was 3 years old. She also has a part-time job at Eastside Rehabilitation and Living Center.

Hampden kindergarten

HAMPDEN – Hampden kindergarten registration for children who will be 5 years old by Oct. 15 will be held 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, at McGraw School. Parents not able to attend the registration may pick up forms at the school office between 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. daily.

Parents do not need to bring their child to registration, but should bring birth certificate, immunization records and a small photograph. Screening and parent orientation will be held at a later date.

Old Town High School

OLD TOWN – The Old Town High School Key Club wrapped up a busy holiday season, including a food drive for Cross Roads Ministry, gift wrapping for the Red Cross at the Bangor Mall, cooking dinner for the residents of the Ronald McDonald House, collecting school supplies for Iraqi children, and working at the Cross Roads Ministries Christmas party.

The club did two projects in January – working to raise money for the March of Dimes and hosting a spaghetti dinner to raise money to help the tsunami victims in Southeast Asia.

Winterport kindergarten

WINTERPORT – The Leroy H. Smith School will hold kindergarten registration for children who will be 5 years old by Oct. 15 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, March 7, at the school.

Parents should bring their child’s legal birth certificate, immunization records and a recent photograph. For information, contact the school at 223-4282.

Voice of Democracy

HAMPDEN – Whitcomb-Baker Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4633 and Ladies Auxiliary will hold a recognition night dinner for their Voice of Democracy Audio Essay and Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay contests at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, at the post home on Canoe Club Road.

The Voice of Democracy theme was “Celebrating Our Veterans’ Service.” Hampden Academy winners are Hannah Thieme, first place; Jennifer Swalec, second place; Benjamin Bouchard, third place.

Hannah Thieme also was the second place winner for the district and will receive that award in April.

Patriot’s Pen awards, based on the contest theme “What Service to Our Country Means to Me,” will be presented to Reeds Brook Middle School pupils Nicole Nightingale, first place; Kayla Webb, second place; Morganne Hopper, third place.

Colleges

Arizona State University

TEMPE, Ariz. – Stuart Cady of Orono graduated magna cum laude from Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in agribusiness, majoring in professional golf management.

In addition to earning his college degree, Cady completed all three levels of the Professional Golf Association of America’s Golf Professional Training Program, including 16 months of internship.

The program usually takes at least four and half years, but Cady completed it in three and a half years.

Cady, a 2000 graduate of Orono High School, is the son of Rob and Mary Cady. In golf, he was a two-time Penobscot Valley Conference champion and also a Class C state champion. In ice hockey he was goalie for the Eastern Maine Champion Orono High team.

Cady has accepted a position as an assistant golf pro at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.

Bates College

LEWISTON – David Kelly of Bangor has been named to the dean’s list at Bates College.

A 2004 graduate of Bangor High School, he is the son of Robert and Suzanne Kelly.

Colby College

WATERVILLE – Colby College has announced its dean’s list for the fall semester. Area students included are:

. Mikaela H. Bolduc, French studies and psychology major, daughter of Stephen and Katherine Bolduc of Bangor. She attended Bangor High School.

. Jared A. Gordon, art major, son of Leonard Gordon of Bangor and Jean Gordon of Bangor. He attended St. Paul’s School.

. Jennifer M. Leighton, French studies major, daughter of Michael and Susan Leighton of Orrington. She attended John Bapst Memorial High School.

. Jessica S. Osborne, daughter of Ervin Osborne of Brewer and Susan Spear of Brewer. She attended Brewer High School.

. Tara K. Studley, English major, daughter of Tirrell and Debra Studley of Veazie. She attended John Bapst Memorial High School.

Colby-Sawyer College

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Angela Bull of Hermon, a junior, has been named to the dean’s list at Colby-Sawyer College.

Northeastern University

BOSTON – Matthew Whalen, a sophomore majoring in industrial engineering, has been named to the dean’s list at Northeastern University.

A 2003 graduate of Brewer High School, he is the son of Cheryl and Mike Whalen of Brewer.

Roger Williams University

BRISTOL, R.I. – Roger Williams University has announced its dean’s list for the fall semester. Area students honored were:

. Bucksport, Michael Brennan, a sophomore majoring in engineering.

. Holden, Elise Chasse, a senior majoring in architecture.

. Orrington, Amy Hutchins, a senior majoring in architecture.

Unity College

UNITY – Eric Page, a senior majoring in wildlife biology, has been named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Unity College. He achieved a grade point average of 4.0. He is the son of James Page of Bangor and Catherine Heath of Limerick.

University of Connecticut

STORRS – Leslie Jane Matthews of Hampden has been named to the dean’s list in the school of engineering at the University of Connecticut.

She is the daughter of Andrew and Laura Matthews and is a 2003 graduate of Hampden Academy.

University of Maine at Farmington

FARMINGTON – Sara Kingsbury, a freshman majoring in elementary education, earned a 3.8 grade point average last fall at the University of Maine at Farmington.

She is the daughter of Brenda and Galen Kingsbury of Winterport and is a 2004 honors graduate of Hampden Academy.

University of Maine

ORONO – Matthew Hunter has been named an intern for the spring semester in the Washington office of U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe.

Hunter, who is from Unity, is a junior at the University of Maine with a double major in political science and history.

Ten student teams from the University of Maine are registered to compete in the University of Southern Maine Business Plan Competition.

The contest is hosted by the Center for Entrepreneurship at USM’s School of Business.

Teams develop their original business ideas into solid business plans with expertise and mentoring available from academic and business experts provided by the center, USM Corporate Partners and other community organizations.

Final judging will take place April 9. The winning team will receive $10,000 and $15,000 in consulting services when the winner is announced April 13.
