TRENTON – A Bar Harbor man was burned early Saturday morning and later was taken to a hospital in Boston after his vehicle burst into flames at Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport, according to officials.
A few minutes after midnight, Adam Hilton, 20, walked barefoot from his burning car on the airport access road to a nearby airport building, a distance of several hundred yards, Hancock County Deputy Sheriff Andrew Feeney said Sunday.
Hilton forced his way into the Columbia Air Services building before calling for help and falsely telling a dispatcher that “six to 10” people had been burned in a vehicle explosion, Feeney said.
Multiple ambulances and fire departments, acting on the incorrect information, went to the scene, the deputy said. After further investigation and questioning it became clear Hilton was the only person hurt or directly involved in the incident, he said.
The deputy said Hilton’s injuries included wounds to his feet. He said he was not sure whether Hilton hurt his feet in the fire or by walking barefoot on broken glass after he broke into the airport building.
“There was bloody tracks all through the place,” Feeney said.
He said it is not known why Hilton was at the airport around midnight Friday.
Hilton was flown by LifeFlight helicopter from Trenton to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, according to Feeney. He said Hilton since has been taken to a hospital in Boston but that he is not sure which one.
Blood that was taken from Hilton in Bangor will be tested for possible intoxicants, Feeney said. Charges may be filed pending further investigation, he said.
According to Trenton Fire Chief Kelton Muise, Hilton’s 1998 Audi was destroyed in the fire. Because of the extensive damage, he said, it cannot be determined what caused it to catch fire.
“The car was completely burned up,” Muise said. “There was nothing left of it.”
