As a young man I rode many thousands of miles on several different motorcycles over most of the eastern United States. I always wore a helmet, and thank God I had the wisdom to do so.
I had a crash once and wore a hole in the top of a brand new Bell 500 helmet the size of a quarter. As hardheaded as I am, I doubt if my head would have worn as well as that helmet.
I don’t think we need to mandate that everyone wears a helmet. All that is necessary is that if individuals have head injuries due to the lack of a helmet that they automatically give up the right of free medical care and that they or their families be required to sell their assets to pay for the individuals’ care. That way everyone is happy.
Bikers can have the sense of daring increased by the knowledge that they are solely responsible for their own welfare and I will have the same feeling knowing that I don’t have to finance that responsibility.
