The Mount Desert Island Rod and Gun Club held its annual ice fishing derby on Saturday, and a variety of prizes were handed out.

Robin Walls took the largest salmon, a 3-pound, 1-ounce fish, out of Jordan Pond. Roy Whalen’s 2-pound, 11-ounce salmon from Tunk Lake was second.

In the togue class, Tondy Grant pulled a 6-pound, 8-ounce laker from Green Lake while Jeff Clark winched up a 5-pound, 7-ouncer from Branch Lake.

Ken Colson landed the largest brown trout – 1 pound, 9 ounces from Jones Pond while Chris Nelson caught a 1-pounder, also at Jones Pond.

The largest bass was a 2-pound, 15-ounce fish caught by Joey Whalen in Alamoosook Lake. Josh Colson landed a 2-pound, 8-ounce fish at Jones Pond.

In the children’s division, Jacob Fennelly took top honors with a 4-pound, 11-ounce togue from Green Lake. Ryan Seymour was second with a 2-pound, 8-ounce pickerel from Great Pond.

Muzeroll to teach tying class

Noted fly-tier Ed “Muzzy” Muzeroll will teach a one-day class on classic Atlantic salmon flies on Sunday, Feb. 27 in Holden.

All materials for tying the fly will be provided, but students must bring their own vise, tools, light and other equipment.

The fly for the day will be a baron. The class costs $60, and the class size is limited to six students to ensure individualized instruction.

NRA hosting Bangor event

The National Rifle Association is holding a free grassroots legislative workshop at the BIA Four Points Sheraton on March 12 from 9-11 a.m.

NRA staffers and local election volunteer coordinators will discuss the legislative agenda and protecting Second Amendment Rights.

The Pine Tree Camp will host a Winter Fun Day fundraiser on Feb. 26.

Colonel’s Outdoor Tip

Each week Col. Tom Santaguida, chief of the Maine Warden Service provides an outdoor tip in the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife’s report.

Here’s his tip for this week.

“With the recent heavy snowfall, Maine anglers who plan on ice fishing on Sebago Lake and other large bodies of water are asked to use extreme caution,” Santaguida wrote.

“Game Wardens in the Sebago Lake region have reported very serious thin ice conditions on many parts of Sebago Lake. There are locations on the lake where wardens have observed snowmobiles crossing the ice that if those snowmobiles had stopped, they surely would have broken through.

“Heavy snowfalls often create a perception of thick ice, but the opposite is often true. When thin ice exists, a heavy snow often acts as an insulator and prevents ice from thickening. This leaves a very dangerous condition of thin ice below the snow cover.

“Before traveling on any lake, make sure you know what the local ice conditions are. Your local game warden or bait and tackle shop are good sources of information on ice conditions.
