ORONO – The University of Maine women’s hockey team moved into the fourth and final Hockey East playoff slot by completing a sweep of visiting Northeastern 5-0 Saturday while Boston College split with Providence over the weekend.
Maine now has a one-point lead over Boston College and the two playoff contenders will square off in a two-game set next weekend in Boston.
On Saturday, Rachel Gettings made 16 saves and early second-period goals 1:47 apart by Kate Sunstrum and Tristan Desmet broke the game open. Kelly Law made it 4-0 later in the period.
Bridgitte Laflamme scored in the first period and Julie Poulin added an empty-net goal with 50 seconds left.
Laura Maddin had a pair of assists and Poulin had an assist to go with her goal.
Maine is now 14-11-3 overall, 5-9-2 in Hockey East.
Marisa Hourihan made 29 saves for Northeastern, which is now 3-22-3 and 2-12-2, respectively.
