No. 8 Rockland upsets No. 1 PI Stanley’s last-second 3-pointer lifts No. 5 MDI by No. 4 Ellsworth

BANGOR – Rockland’s junior class of Lindsay Barnes, Caitlin Hynes, and Allie Todd hooked up for what was likely the biggest quarter of basketball in their careers during Saturday’s Eastern Maine Class B quarterfinal against Presque Isle at the Bangor Auditorium.

Todd hit two big 3-pointers and Hynes and Barnes collaborated on the winning basket as the No. 8 Tigers shocked the No. 1 Wildcats 47-44 at the Bangor Auditorium.

Rockland got 17 points from Barnes and 16 from Hynes as the Tigers earned a berth against No. 5 MDI in Wednesday’s 3:35 p.m. regional semifinal.

It was the second year in a row Presque Isle had been eliminated as the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals, and by the same score as last year’s loss to then-No. 8 Camden Hills.

Fans were treated to two exciting upsets Saturday morning. Rockland’s win followed a thriller between No. 4 Ellsworth and the Trojans, as Emma Stanley’s 3-pointer with two seconds left boosted MDI to a 38-37 victory.

Rockland had a five-point halftime lead, but the Wildcats, powered by Angela Norsworthy’s eight points, cut Rockland’s lead to one. Presque Isle took its first lead of the game when Kylan Smith nailed a 3-pointer to open the fourth.

The ‘Cats gained a four-point edge later in the quarter, but Todd hit two 3-pointers for a 44-42 Rockland lead.

“That pumped us up, gave us the lead, did everything,” Hynes said.

Norsworthy tied it with 2:35 left, but Hynes picked up a loose ball and worked a back-door play for Barnes with 1:26 left to make it 46-44. Todd sealed it with a free throw.

PI’s Tasha Deschene tried three 3-pointers with less than 15 seconds left, to no avail.

“We expended so much energy getting back into the game that I think we let down a little [at the end],” Wildcats coach Jeff Hudson said.

Hynes also grabbed 11 rebounds and had four assists and four blocks. Barnes had nine boards and eight assists.

Deschene sparkled with 16 rebounds (11 offensive) and six assists. Katie Delong added six rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

But the Wildcats, who are known for stellar shooting, went 4-for-28 from 3-point range.

In Saturday’s first quarterfinal, point guard Stanley said she was just trying to get the ball to Kelsey Stratton, who has been MDI’s top shooter. But Stratton was double-teamed and time was winding down on Ellsworth’s two-point lead.

“[Stratton] kicked it out and I was wide open,” she said. “I thought it was going to be a 2. But [the referee] put up his arms and that was it.”

The Eagles battled from behind for the entire game until they started to press the Trojans late in the third and Monique Boutaugh (16 points) powered an Ellsworth rally in the fourth quarter. She scored seven points during a stretch in the fourth and Ashley Oleson scored off an offensive rebound to make it MDI 35-34.

The Eagles took their first lead when Boutaugh drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key, but after an MDI timeout the Trojans worked the ball around to Stanley for the winner.

“That one hurts,” Ellsworth coach Dana Smith said. “We just played our guts out. Our pressure turned it around and in our heart, the girls just played hard.”

MDI’s zone defense – especially Trojan senior Chelsea Dow – bottled up Ellsworth standout Oleson. She scored six points but had a game-high nine rebounds.

Stratton finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
