BANGOR – The last time Calvary Chapel of Orrington and Central Aroostook of Mars Hill boys basketball teams met, the 2004 Eastern Maine Class D championship was on the line.
Calvary Chapel won that battle in overtime and went on to win the state title. Now the teams are poised to meet again at 7:05 p.m. Thursday after earning regional quarterfinal victories Monday morning at the Bangor Auditorium.
No. 2 Central Aroostook advanced with a 91-40 victory over No. 7 Greenville, just after No. 3 Calvary Chapel topped No. 6 Deer Isle-Stonington 52-36.
“We know we’re going to have to play better against Central Aroostook to get a win on Thursday night,” said Calvary Chapel guard Brock Bradford. “They’re a talented club, they move the ball well. We’re going to have to play better and we know that. The important thing today was that we got the win and can continue to play.”
Bradford had 32 points and five steals as the Sabers’ sagging man-to-man defense denied Deer Isle-Stonington its preferred inside attack.
“They know we’re a drive-and-kick team,” said Mariners guard Nick Ciomei, whose team had split two regular-season meetings with the Sabers. “But we don’t kick it out, we kick it inside. We just look for layups every time, and they played well against us.”
Calvary Chapel (18-2) held the Mariners scoreless for a 10-minute, 11-second stretch of the first half while moving out to an 18-4 lead, and the Sabers maintained a 22-14 lead at halftime as Bradford scored 10 early points and forward Bryan Miller worked inside for eight first-half points on 4-of-4 shooting.
Deer Isle-Stonington, meanwhile, managed just 10 field-goal attempts in the half while committing 11 turnovers.
“They go backdoor a lot and get through their screens,” said Miller, who finished with 13 points. “We wanted to clog up the middle because once their tall guy [6-foot-4 center Thomas Robbins] gets it we don’t have really have any tall guys to help out.”
Deer Isle-Stonington (15-5) scored the first six points of the second half to draw within 24-20 on a Ciomei layup, but Bradford scored Calvary Chapel’s next seven points on three jumpers to give his team a 31-22 lead at the end of the period.
The Sabers extended that margin at the free-throw line, making 13 of 18 tries during the fourth quarter. Bradford was 9 of 12 from the line in the period, and 13 of 16 for the game.
Ciomei’s 10 points led Deer Isle-Stonington.
Central Aroostook spotted Greenville a 4-0 lead, then outscored the Lakers 22-4 for the rest of the first period.
Taylor McLaughlin was a quick starter for the 19-1 Panthers, scoring eight of his 10 points in the opening quarter and finishing as one of five Central Aroostook scorers in double figures.
Junior forward Andrew York finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard Jason Woodworth added 18 points, including the 1,000th of his career.
McLaughlin, Tim Carlson and Eric Martinez added 10 points each, with Carlson grabbing 10 rebounds.
Sam Clockedile chipped in with nine points for the Panthers, who led 44-16 at halftime.
“That is very typical of us,” said Woodworth of the balanced attack. “Andrew York and Tim Carlson, they’ve been on a roll, I can put in 10 or 15, and we’ve got guys off the bench who can do the job. We usually have three or four guys in double figures.”
Rebounding and pressure defense helped Central Aroostook get good shots throughout the contest. The Panthers shot 56 percent (32 of 59) from the field, compared to 18 percent (13 of 72) for Greenville.
“We usually score a lot of points,” said York, “so we just had to make sure we worked hard on defense.”
Junior guard Joe Jardine led 13-6 Greenville with 26 points. The Lakers’ cause was hurt when junior guard Jonah Lizotte was sidelined with a left ankle injury midway through the first quarter.
