Brewer, UM bands to play ‘cold’ concert

BREWER – The Brewer Hometown Band will host the “Come In Out of the Cold Concert” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at Brewer Auditorium.

Also on the program will be the University of Maine Symphonic Band under the direction of Professor Curvin “Chip” Farnham.

The Brewer Band was active in the early 1900s and was re-established as the Brewer Hometown Band in 1979. Activities range from summer concerts and seasonal concerts to the spring pops concert in March. The band also participates in parades.

Five years ago, the band represented Maine in the National Festival of States Bicentennial in Washington, playing music by Maine composers R.B. Hall, H.J. Crosby, Arthur F. Roundy and Haywood S. Jones.

The band’s 55 members come from as far away as Dover-Foxcroft, Monson, Castine, Belfast, Fairfield, Lincoln and Deer Isle.

The UM Symphonic Band is a group of more than 60 aspiring instrumentalists from all academic disciplines.

Guest conductors have included Frank Erickson, Jay Chattaway and, Jerry Nowak.
