I was shocked when I read the article, “Bill limits licenses to valid visa holders/BMV process called security risk” (BDN, Feb. 23).

I thought a Maine driver’s license was proof that a Maine resident was qualified to drive in the state. It was not meant to be a form of identification to someone who stated that he had no intention of living in our state. After he received the license, how are we able to find him if he decided to do something illegal?

There are enough scams and identity thefts going on without providing another form of identification to someone who admittedly was facing deportation. It seems that the only form of ID required by the state is a lawyer and photocopies of some expired documents.

Hopefully our legislators will act to restrict the privilege of driving in Maine to people living in Maine.
