Fisher defeats Clippers to claim Sunrise crown

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – Charles Carmine scored 22 points Sunday afternoon to lead Fisher College of Boston to the Sunrise Conference men’s basketball title with a 79-75 victory over the University of Maine-Machias.

In Saturday’s semifinals, UM-Machias beat host Lyndon State 99-78 and Fisher downed the UMaine-Fort Kent 89-65.

In the championship, Steve Perry contributed 18 points for Fisher.

Jemel Davila tallied 23 for the Clippers. Wayne Clark had 11 and Nedrie Simmons had 10.

In the first semifinal, Jemel Davila netted 20 points, and Joel Davila scored 16 for UM-Machias. Jeremiah Johnson and Simmons each added 13 points.

Kevin Trask led Lyndon State with 25 points. Chris Brown had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Alex Ibey had 12 points.

In the second semifinal, Steve Healy tallied 29 points for Fisher. Billy Russo scored 18 for the Bengals, while Darius Parker and Bartas Samaitis each had 10.

Amherst wins NESCAC crown

At Amherst, Mass., Andrew Schiel had 23 points, eight rebounds, and five blocks to help lead Amherst College past Bates College 65-57 to win the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday.

Bates beat Tufts 60-54 on Saturday to advance to the finals.

In the championship game, John Bedford scored 18 points and had nine rebounds for Amherst.

Rob Stockwell had 16 points and nine rebounds and Zak Ray scored 13 points to lead Bates of Lewiston. Jon Furbush scored 10 points and Elliott Linsley had nine points and 13 rebounds.

In the semifinals, Ray had 17 points and six assists for Bates and Linsley added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Furbush scored 11 points and Stockwell had 11 boards.

Reggie Stovell led Tufts with 21 points and 13 rebounds.

At Standish, Ryan Artley scored 24 points to help lead Finlandia University past Saint Joseph’s College in the Association of Division III Independents Regional Championship consolation game.

New Jersey City University defeated Lincoln University 92-82 to win the championship.

Jon Pratt led the Monks with 22 points and eight rebounds and Marcus Alexander had 14 points and eight boards.
