BRADENTON, Fla. – Greg Norton pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, as the University of Maine baseball team shut out Seton Hall 11-0 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Black Bears even their record at 1-1, while Seton Hall falls to 1-5 on the campaign.
The win was the 250th for Maine coach Paul Kostacopoulos as head coach of the Black Bears.
Norton went seven innings, scattering three hits. He did not walk a batter, struck out four and hit two. Scott Robinson pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
Ryan Quintal led Maine at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a walk. He tripled, doubled and singled twice.
The Black Bears face Seton Hall today at 10:30 a.m., then take on Valparaiso at 3 p.m.
UMaine took at 2-0 lead into the eighth. Quintal led off the inning with a single to left field. Mark Ostrander followed with a single to left. Mike Ferriggi advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt.
Moises Rivera was hit by a pitch, then Quintal scored on a wild pitch to give Maine a 3-0 lead. Joe Hough singled to right field, scoring Ostrander, Aaron Izaryk reached on a fielder’s choice and Joel Barrett was hit by a pitch to load the bases once again.
Freshman Frank Pesanello delivered the big hit of the inning, a three-run double to center field.
Maine added four runs in the top of the ninth. Quintal, who led off five innings and reached base each time, singled to start the inning. Ostrander followed with a single.
Quintal scored when Ferriggi lined out and the first baseman was called for interference. Rivera singled to score Ostrander and Hough followed with an RBI triple. Hough scored on a wild pitch.

Maine drops two to South Florida
At Tampa, Fla., Alycia LePage knocked in Tiffany Stewart in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the University of South Florida a 1-0 win in the second game over Maine. South Florida also beat the Black Bears in the first game 1-0.
In the first game, Christie Chapman hit an RBI double to score LePage to lead South Florida to the win.
Jess Brady and Dana Grimm each singled for the Black Bears.
In the second game, LePage and Carmela Liwag each doubled and singled for the Bulls.
Jenna Merchant gave up just eight hits through 8 1/3 innings, walking two, striking out six, and allowing no earned runs for the Black Bears. Erin Provost hit two singles.
