GREENVILLE – Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a fluorescent-orange snowmobile that was stolen on Tuesday from Big Lake Equipment.

Someone broke a side door into the Greenville business during Tuesday night’s snowstorm and took a 2004 Arctic Cat King Cat 900 cc twin engine snowmobile valued at $11,000, according to Greenville Police Chief Duane Alexander.

The burglars also took about $3,500 in assorted snowmobile items, he said Thursday.

Alexander said it appeared that the burglars were looking for this particular snowmobile because of its rarity in New England. The vehicle is thought to be one of three in Maine, he said.

The burglars siphoned the gasoline from two snowmobiles that were being serviced inside the business, filled the tank of the Arctic Cat and drove off on it, he said.

Also taken were a digital camera, power cords, helmets, gloves and other snowmobile gear.

Big Lake Equipment owner Paul “Arno” Fitchner said Thursday that he had ordered the mountain snowmobile for a customer who later changed his mind about the purchase after the vehicle was delivered. He said the snowmobile was made out West and is designed for mountainous terrain.

The 13-foot-long snowmobile had a chrome windshield and black skis that had a hint of silver, according to Alexander.

Anyone who may have seen the snowmobile or who has information that will be helpful in the case should call Alexander at 695-3835.
