MOMS club sponsors scrapbooking event

Each local chapter of the nonprofit International MOMS Club, which stands for “mothers offering mothers support,” has an annual service project requirement.

Laura Lewis-Schaab, a member of the Bangor-Brewer Moms Club, said her chapter works “on behalf of children in the area.”

In order to fund this year’s service project, the Bangor-Brewer MOMS club is sponsoring an all-day Scrapbooking Extravaganza from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at the Bangor Elks Club, 108 Odlin Road.

Advance tickets are $20 per person, or $25 at the door, and can be purchased through Friday, March 11.

“We would love to have a large turnout in order to make a real difference in the lives of Bangor-area children this year,” Lewis-Schaab wrote.

The Scrapbooking Extravaganza features classes on scrapbooking techniques and will include a border class.

Lunch can be purchased for an additional $5, door prizes will be given away, and you also can participate in a raffle.

Attendees are invited to bring their own pictures, albums and supplies, but vendors also will be available with materials for sale.

To purchase a ticket or receive more information, call Kristin Tlili at 942-3063 or Leigh-Anna Lavoie at 945-6298.

Caroline Tully of the Bangor Garden Club called to report that your response was so terrific that the club has added a third bus for the Massachusetts Horticultural Society 2005 New England Spring Flower Show, which we know as the Boston Flower Show.

The buses leave at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, from Broadway Plaza Shopping Center in Bangor, and will stop in Newport and Waterville.

The return time is approximately 10:30 p.m. that day in Bangor.

The $65-per-person ticket includes coach fare and admission to the show.

“We have filled the two buses and have people signed up for a third, but there is still room for more,” Tully said. “We will take reservations right up to Saturday, March 12.”

To enjoy “A Fresh Perspective” in a garden wonderland, call Tully at 945-3807.

Former Bangor Symphony Orchestra conductor Peter Re, who led the orchestra from 1964 to 1976, will be honored with a 40th anniversary tribute during the BSO concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at Maine Center for the Arts in Orono.

Re will be present for the concert, which features guest soloist Chuan-Yun Li in the fourth Classical Concert in this BSO series.

Advance ticket prices are $13-$38 and can be reserved by ordering online at www.bangorsymphony.com or calling the BSO box office at (800) 639-3221 or 942-5555.

Others are invited to drop off nonperishable food items at Curves during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, during March.

Eastern Maine School of Self Defense is offering a woman’s self-defense workshop at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 20, at 1005 Olive St. in Veazie.

Registration, however, is limited to 20 participants.

Head instructor Glen Kennedy will conduct the introductory workshop, which will focus on the basics of emotion control, avoidance, physical confrontation and ending conflict.

Participants must be at least 13, and those under 18 will need parental permission.

Because the workshop is free and limited to the first 20 women to register, you are asked not to register if you are not certain you can attend.

Although the workshop will have physical demands, you will participate only in those activities with which you are comfortable.

Kennedy explained that because many of his assistant instructors, both male and female, will be involved with the workshop, most of the students can expect to have “an instructor to themselves.”

“Or, at least,” he wrote, “it allows us to break into small groups and really focus on the needs of the individuals.”

To register for this valuable workshop, call 990-9330 or e-mail Maineshotokan@aol.com or Sensei@EasternMaineKarate.com.
