DELAND, Fla. – Aaron Izaryk and Greg Creek each doubled, singled and drove in two runs as the University of Maine baseball team edged Stetson 4-3 Friday in college action.

Ryan Quintal, Curt Smith and Mike Ferriggi each had two singles as the Black Bears pounded out 11 hits. Creek allowed one run and two hits while striking out seven through six innings. Troy Martin earned the save.

Shane Jordan doubled for Stetson.

Black Bears drop two

At Deland, Fla., the University of Maine Black Bears competed in the first day of a tournament at Stetson University, falling 1-0 in the first game against Jacksonville State and dropping a 9-0 decision against the host-school Stetson.

Maine is now 0-6, having lost four games by a score of 1-0.

Against Jacksonville State, Maine freshman Jenna Balent went the complete game and gave up eight hits with three strikeouts. Jess Brady, Lauren Dulkis and Brittany Cheney all were 1-for3 for the Bears, who had 14 strikeouts in the game.

In the second game, Maine’s Candace Jaegge went the first four innings, giving up five runs. Jenna Merchant came into the game in the fifth inning and gave up a grand slam. The Black Bears did not have a hit in the game.

Connecticut 3, Maine 2

At Orono, Jaclyn Hawkins netted two goals for the Huskies as Maine lost their battle for the playoffs despite outshooting UConn 39-15.

Natalie Vilbert scored 14-11-8 Connecticut’s third goal. Jennifer Houldon and Angie Wallace each had an assist. Kaitlyn Shain made 37 saves on 39 shots.

Sonia Corriveau led the 14-14-3 Black Bears’ attempted rally with her goal in the third with assists from Bridgitte LaFlamme and Kelly Law. Sheri Wauters scored Maine’s first goal on Abby Krause and Danielle Tangredi assists.
