Compelling state issues

A couple of issues compel me to write.

The first is Sunday hunting which will add a small amount of money to state coffers at a great expense to citizens. It will put landowners and hunters at odds when for years they have accommodated each other well.

Six days a week should be sufficient for hunting.

There are many people statewide who enjoy hikes, horseback riding and biking who will no longer be safe doing so on Sunday – a family day. If the state feels Sunday hunting must be considered let them put it to a vote and settle the issue.

Secondly, is the issue of selling of assets from the liquor commission sale and the proposed lottery sale: simply poor business.

This will cost the state greatly in much-needed future income, a loss that state cannot afford. It is a Band-Aid fix, which only adds to Maine’s future financial jeopardy.

What will come next, selling off state buildings for quick cash and leasing them back?

Maine needs sound fiscal policies and our leaders should start with that consideration. Borrowing from tomorrow through more bond issues is not the answer, it is running our state’s “credit cards” way over their limit.

We all need to swallow hard and learn to just say no to some areas of spending.
