Wilson, Bell lead Witches past Hornets Vikings top Cony Rams

BANGOR – It took all day Saturday, but a Class A East boys team finally figured out the rims at Bangor Auditorium.

Thirteenth-seeded Brewer (11-9) torched the nets to the tune of 66 percent from the floor and came away with a 54-46 win over No. 12 Leavitt (10-10) in the day’s last quarterfinal.

“Someone told me before the game started that we couldn’t shoot any worse than the other teams that played today,” Brewer coach Mark Reed joked after the game.

Witches junior point guard Chris Wilson led his team with 21 points, six rebounds, and five assists and controlled the flow of the game any time Leavitt of Turner encroached on Brewer’s lead.

“We knew going in that everything was going to run through Chris Wilson,” Leavitt coach Mike Remillard said. “Big players have a way of coming up in big game and he just played a beautiful ballgame.”

Brewer advanced to an 8:35 p.m. Friday semifinal against No. 9 Hampden, which upset No. 1 Bangor 44-40.

In Saturday’s first quarterfinal, No. 2 Oxford Hills of South Paris edged No. 7 Cony of Augusta 30-26 to set up a 7:05 p.m. Friday semifinal against No. 3 Gardiner.

The Witches started the game hot, with senior Isaac Bell (14 points) scoring two buckets down low and Wilson hitting a pair of 3-pointers.

“We really tried to penetrate the gaps of their zone and move the ball quick,” Wilson said.

Brewer didn’t let up, closing the first half with a 12-4 run to take a 26-17 halftime edge. The Witches pushed the lead to 11 points at the end of the third quarter.

The Hornets cut their deficit to 47-41 midway through the fourth quarter but ran out of time down the stretch. Seniors Jon Pirruccello and Brandon Powell scored 14 and 13 points, respectively.

“They were well prepared; coach Reed did a great job with his kids,” Remillard said.

Brewer now prepares for its semifinal showdown against Big East rival Hampden.

“We’ve got our work cut out for us, [Hampden] is a talented team,” Reed said.

Wilson said that, in the tournament, seedings are meaningless.

“We never really looked at our seeding,” he said. “It didn’t matter what our number was, we knew we just had to win games.”

Saturday morning’s game between Oxford Hills and Cony was either a defensive dream or an offensive nightmare, depending on your preference.

The Vikings never led by more than eight points and shot only 31 percent from the floor, but fortunately it was enough to squeak by the Rams.

“It’s disgusting,” Oxford Hills coach Scott Graffam said. “The first game is always the hardest one for us up here; we never shoot well here.”

Luckily for the Vikings, Cony (12-8) couldn’t shoot either. The Rams made only 23 percent of their field goals, but they still were in the game until the final minute.

“We always try to play to give our kids a chance to win,” Cony coach Bruce Hunt said. “It was an ugly game, but we had our chances to win today.”

The Vikings had a 29-26 lead late in the game but missed two free throws and the front end of a one-and-one to give the Rams a chance to tie with about a minute left.

Cony’s Eric Lui had an open look from the top of the key, but like so many other shots that day, it didn’t drop.

“A lot of things might have happened if that ‘3’ had gone in,” Hunt said.

Instead, Oxford Hills (16-3) moves on to the semifinals.

“Even though we weren’t shooting good, we started looking inside and got some easier shots down low,” Oxford Hills’ Corey Saunders said. “We were lucky, I guess; it got a little scary toward the end.”

Cony received seven points apiece from Eric Lui and Chris Carville. Senior Matt McDonnell paced the Vikings with eight points and Leif Kothe added seven.
