NORTH HAVEN – Funding a new fire station will top the agenda during Saturday’s annual town meeting.
Voters will be asked to raise $25,000 for a reserve fund for building a six-bay station. The architectural design of the 5,000-square-foot building has been completed already, Town Administrator Alton Hadley said.
Townspeople have not yet decided whether the station should be built on land that houses the existing station or somewhere else.
At Saturday’s meeting, taxpayers will consider a $1,075,435 municipal budget, which reflects a 7.8 percent increase in spending, compared with the current budget. The net budget, or amount to be raised through property taxes, is $682,135, a 7.6 percent increase.
The estimated revenue to be used to reduce taxes is $230,300, up 16 percent.
Some of the other items driving the budget upward are: $9,000 to replace the town’s computer system and a $10,500 automatic defibrillator for emergency medical services.
The town administrator is slated to receive the same 3.5 percent wage increase as other employees, Hadley said. His annual salary will rise to $42,270.
The town’s shares of SAD 7 and Knox County assessments are not yet known, Hadley said. The current tax rate is $12.70 per $1,000 of assessed value.
During the town meeting, several new officers will be elected from the floor.
Three-year positions held by incumbent Selectmen Patricia Curtis and Jon Emerson will be up for grabs. Curtis will run again, Hadley said, but he was not sure whether Emerson would seek another term.
Three-year terms for SAD 7 directors Juliette Brown and Rosanne Grant are also open to competition. Both have indicated they will not seek re-election, he said.
A nominating committee is seeking candidates interested in those and other town positions. Anyone interested in running for office may contact the town office or be nominated from the floor.
The North Haven annual town meeting will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 12, at the Community Building.
