PORTLAND – David Haraden, accused of killing a Rockport woman in a Portland hotel, has entered a not-guilty plea in Cumberland County Superior Court.

Haraden, 48, is accused of beating to death his girlfriend, Maxine Witham, 35, in the Eastland Hotel a day or two after Jan. 1. He was indicted on a murder charge last month.

Haraden told police another man beat Witham and that he chased the man out of the hotel.

The couple had been living in Rockport. Local police were familiar with the couple, having arrested Haraden for domestic abuse on one occasion, and investigated him on the same charge in another incident.

Haraden is being held without bail in the Cumberland County Jail. Assistant Attorney General Lisa Marchese said Tuesday that a hearing is expected on Haraden’s bail in coming weeks.

A judge gave both lawyers 60 days in which to file motions on the case, and a November trial is expected, she said.
