OLD TOWN – The Old Town Orono YMCA began new fitness classes on Feb. 28. Amy Hamlin, fitness director, said that several classes for preteens, teens, adults and older adults have been added to complement the selection of fitness classes. Fitness classes are free of charge to Y members, unless otherwise noted.

In addition to offering a wide variety of classes including Aikido, Pilates, step and senior fitness, the Old Town-Orono YMCA has added the following classes:

. Healthy Kids, geared toward preteens in grades four and five, all fitness levels. The class involves studio time, physio balls, weights and nonsport-oriented fitness drills. The goal of Healthy Kids is to get preteens comfortable with fitness and to encourage continued exercise for a lifetime.

. Youth Fitness, for teens in grades six through eight. The class is based in the Y’s fitness center and also uses the fitness studio. Teens will be introduced to the benefits and proper use of cardiovascular and functional resistance training.

. Pilates-Yoga Fusion, a new adult class combining both types of workout. Core conditioning, strength and flexibility will be emphasized.

. Cardio Kick and Step, a high-intensity adult class led by a certified instructor. It offers a cardio kickboxing workout using the step.

. Bone Builders, a class for adults over 55 to combat osteoporosis with the use of weights. Through a coordinated effort with the University of Maine and RSVP, the class provides a wide range of exercises. It is open to anyone in community, 55 and older, free of charge. Although this class is currently full, another class session will be added if there is enough community interest. Call the Y for more information.

. Tri-the-Y, a 10-week triathlon training to prepare participants for a triathlon to be held in July in Unity. Taught by Stephanie Peavey, the class includes group rides, swimming and running. Inquire at the YMCA for rates and dates of this program.

In addition, the Old Town- Orono YMCA has added personal training, fitness testing and massage. These are scheduled on an individual basis for a fee and provided by certified instructors.
