CORINTH – A man who claimed to be carrying a weapon robbed a bank branch in this small Penobscot County town Thursday morning, making off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Police were searching for a suspect Thursday night.
Three employees were in the UnitedKingfield Bank branch when the robbery occurred about 10:30 a.m. One customer was inside, and another customer was at the branch’s drive-up window. Nobody was injured, police said.
The branch at the corner of Routes 15 and 43 was closed the rest of Thursday while police conducted interviews and processed evidence, including surveillance that captured the suspect on videotape.
Maine State Police, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI went to the scene and were continuing their investigation Thursday night. Bank robbery is a federal crime.
“We have at least one suspect,” Maine State Police Trooper Matt Grant said Thursday afternoon.
Police were looking for a 5-foot-9-inch white male wearing a winter parka, a knit hat with a pompom on top and blue-tinted sunglasses.
Police released few details about how the robbery occurred or who the suspects are. A man entered the branch carrying a binder. He approached a teller, showed her a note demanding cash and warned her that he was armed.
The man “reached into his pocket, indicating that he might be armed, but no weapon was displayed,” said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.
The man left the bank on foot with an undetermined amount of money, according to police.
“From there we’re not exactly sure what transpired,” Grant said.
The robber may have gotten into a blue Jeep Cherokee that was seen leaving the area around the time of the robbery. Police were looking for that vehicle, which they said was occupied by two males.
“We do not know if it’s connected or not,” McCausland said.
While interviewing neighbors and residents who may have seen anything suspicious, police stopped at the Town Hall, but the clerks there said they hadn’t seen anything.
Several Corinth residents said they weren’t even aware of the robbery until they saw the more than 10 state police and Sheriff’s Department cars lining the roads around the bank.
“We didn’t know anything was going on until the police cars showed up,” said Gary Blackwell of Corinth. Blackwell owns Blackwell Insurance Agency, two buildings down from the bank branch.
“It’s a quiet town even during a robbery,” he said.
