Robert Morris, Loyola down Bears

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Robert Morris (Pa.) snapped the University of Maine softball team’s three-game winning streak and Loyola-Chicago dealt the Black Bears another loss at the Rebel Spring Games Thursday.

Robert Morris beat the Black Bears 5-2 and Loyola-Chicago triumphed 1-0 as Maine fell to 4-9 on its spring trip, including five 1-0 setbacks.

Against Robert Morris, Lauren Dulkis and Brittany Cheney were the bright spots for the Bears as Dulkis had a double and two singles and Cheney had a double.

Against Loyola, Sarah Bennis pitched a complete game and had seven strikeouts. Christina Belmonte had a double for the Black Bears.

The Florida trip wraps up for Maine today as the Bears take on Wagner at 2:20 p.m. and Holy Cross at 6 p.m. in the Rebel Spring Games.

St. Joseph’s takes two

At Fort Myers, Fla., St. Joseph’s shut out Curry 2-0 in the morning and knocked off Wesleyan 2-1 in the afternoon.

In the first game, Amanda Roy singled in the winning run in the top of the seventh and Leanne Morton scored on an error to add an insurance run.

In the second game, Helene Liaci’s two-run homer in the first was all the Monks needed.

Men’s hockey

UNH 6, Northeastern 1

At Durham, N.H., Preston Callander had a goal and three assists to propel 10th-ranked New Hampshire to a 1-0 lead in the best-of three Hockey East quarterfinal series against Northeastern.

Brett Hemingway and Sean Collins both finished with three points for UNH.

Northeastern’s Steve Sanders collected Bryan Esner’s centering pass and scored Northeastern’s only goal.

UNH goaltender Kevin Regan finished with 24 saves. Northeastern’s Keni Gibson stopped 34 shots and left the game after UNH’s fifth goal. Adam Geragosian allowed one goal and was credited with three saves.
