Project Graduation raffle offers 30 chances to win

The last of many fund-raisers for Bangor High School Class of 2005 Project Graduation offers A Month of Prizes for those who participate in the BHS Project Graduation Raffle.

For $10, you receive one raffle ticket with 30 chances to win, since one prize will be drawn each day beginning Friday, April 1, and continuing through the end of the month.

Winners will be notified by telephone when each prize is drawn.

Linda Stearns reports tickets for the drawing will be collected Tuesday, March 22.

She said that funds raised through Project Graduation would provide “all seniors, regardless of graduating status, a party after graduation at the University of Maine Field House” on the Orono campus.

Stearns wrote that the winner of the first day’s prize receives a one-year membership at Bangor Athletic Club, and that others have the opportunity to win everything from an autographed University of Maine hockey jersey to a PlayStation, salad bar buffet at Miller’s Restaurant for six, or a framed floral print by Thomaston artist Lynn Snow.

The Grand Prize of $1,000 will be drawn on Saturday, April 30.

Because this is the final Class of 2005 Project Graduation fund-raiser, Stearns and others hope for good community support.

You can purchase tickets by calling Donna Ingraham, 942-0524; Chris Dunbar, 941-6200, ext. 170; or Mary Turner, 990-0707.

The public can also purchase tickets, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 13, at Sam’s Club in Bangor.

Here’s a reminder that those who have been collecting pledges for the 2005 Piscataquis Regional YMCA Aerobithon will compete in that event from 9 a.m. to noon today at the PRYMCA, 48 Park St. in Dover-Foxcroft.

Four 30-minutes sessions will be held and prizes awarded the top fund-raiser in five categories.

Proceeds from this fund-raiser will be used by the Fitness Department to purchase new music and fitness equipment.

Here’s a note for those in that area interested in learning Chinese cooking: Chef Karylyn Bayerdorffer of The Maine Ingredient will instruct a class from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 15, at PRYMCA.

The cost of the class is $25 per person.

Charlie Bernstein, program manager for Maine Initiatives in Augusta, has announced that organization is accepting applications for Harvest Fund spring grant proposals.

The fund makes grants to projects that promote sustainable agriculture and food systems in our communities.

Providing $25,000 in small grants, each year, the initiative has funded advocacy, school and youth-based programs, heirloom seed propagation, food co-ops, farm markets, educational publications, winter growing, organic dairy farming and other projects.

The application deadline is Wednesday, April 6.

To apply or receive more information, call Maine Initiatives, 622-6294, e-mail meinit@gwi.net, visit www.maineinitiatives.org or write Maine Initiatives, 283 Water St., P.O. Box 2248, Augusta 04338.

P.E.T.S., which stands for “Prevent Euthanasia Through Sterilization,” is a nonprofit organization serving the Dover-Foxcroft area offering reduced cost spay-neutering for qualifying pet owners.

Fund raising helps support that work, and this one will help you, too.

The P.E.T.S. Spring Yard Sale is 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at the Dover-Foxcroft fire station on Main Street.

The storm date is the same time, Saturday, April 2, at the same site.

P.E.T.S. volunteers urge their friends and neighbors to clean your attics, cellars, sheds and garages, and contribute unneeded items to the yard sale.

To arrange for pickup, or to drop off contributions, call one of the following: Sue Slate, 379-2809; Sally Sue Pearson, 876-2752; Phyllis Dyer, 564-8072; Julie Gallagher, 943-5083; or Mary Shapleigh, 564-8092.

To make a financial donation, mail checks to P.E.T.S., P.O. Box 912, Guilford 04443.

All donations or contributions are tax-deductible, and official receipts are available upon request.

Additionally, P.E.T.S. volunteers are raffling a weekend getaway for two at the Bar Harbor Motel.

Tickets are available at the Cup and Easel in Dover-Foxcroft, or from any P.E.T.S. volunteer.

The drawing is mid-April.

Oops. Nancy Ziegenbein called to point out that in Friday’s column, my second reference to the date of Penobscot Theatre Guild Boston Pops trip was incorrect: The trip is Sunday, May 22, and the registration deadline is Monday, April 4.

Call Ziegenbein, 947-7965, or the PTG office, 942-3333, for information.
