Norton, Boike pitch Black Bears to victory Maine baseball winds up Florida trip with win

BRADENTON, Fla. – The University of Maine baseball team capped off its 12-game Florida trip Saturday with a 6-5 victory over Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.

Greg Norton (2-1) pitched six innings to earn the victory for the Black Bears, who returned home with a 6-6 record. Freshman Nolan Boike pitched three innings to pick up the save.

Ryan Quintal and Steve Gambale each singled twice to pace UMaine, which jumped out to an early 6-1 lead.

IPFW slipped to 8-5 with the loss.

Husson loses two on weekend

At Clearwater, Fla., Tamayo Manzanillo hit two solo home runs to help lead Suffolk University to the 13-4 win over Husson College on Saturday. Johns Hopkins University defeated Husson on Sunday 12-5.

In Saturday’s game, Marc Exarhopolous hit a home run and two singles for Suffolk and Greg DiMarco had a triple and two singles. Matt Batchelder had two singles and two RBIs.

Kyle Mathieu hit two singles for Husson.

In Sunday’s game, Jonas Fester had two singles and a double with two RBIs for Johns Hopkins and Brian Harris knocked in three runs on three singles. Gary Rosenberg singled and doubled with three RBIs and Eric Nigro hit three singles.

Justin Spencer hit a grand slam in the seventh inning and had a double and two singles to lead Husson. Chris McInnis added two singles.

Saint Joseph’s drops two games

At Fort Myers, Fla., Dana Warnock pitched a no-hitter to help Montclair State University past Saint Joseph’s College in the second game 12-0. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute won the first game 7-1.

In the first game, Nikki Dooley struck out 10 and allowed just one run for Rensselaer Polytechnic and Amy Huling doubled and singled.

Darcy Lee hit a double and two singles for Saint Joseph’s College and Kahler Dowling had a single and a RBI.

In the second game, Athanasia Totaro homered to lead of the game and doubled and singled to drive in three runs for Montclair State. Nicole Pacicco made it back-to-back solo home runs and had three RBIs. Jackie Feranti hit a double and two singles to drive in two runs.

Jamie Morrison was Saint Joseph’s only base runner, reaching on a walk.

Black Bears lose two games

At Kissimmee, Fla., the University of Maine softball team wrapped up its trip to Florida on Friday with a 2-1 loss to Wagner and a 4-3 loss to Holy Cross at the Rebel Spring Games. Maine is now 4-11 on the season.

In the first game of the day against Wagner, Sarah Bennis pitched a complete game and had four strikeouts. Lindsay Tibbetts tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning, but Wagner scored the winning run in the seventh inning.

Against Holy Cross, Candace Jaegge went the distance and recorded six strikeouts. From the plate, Erin Provost was two-for-four. Jess Brady was three-for-three and Brittany Cheney was two-for-three.
