Cheverus wins ‘A’ hockey title

LEWISTON – Cheverus of Portland took the lead 11 seconds into the match and went on to a 5-2 victory over Lewiston to win its first Class A hockey state championship at the Colisee on Tuesday night.

Cheverus finished its season with a 21-1 record, its only loss a 3-2 decision to Bangor. Lewiston, which defeated Bangor 3-2 in the Eastern Maine final, finishes 18-6.

Sam Johnson scored on a 2 on 1 break with Alex Arthur off the game’s opening faceoff to give the Stags a 1-0 lead, and Arthur scored 2:56 into the opening period for a 2-0 Cheverus lead.

Lewiston did close within 2-1 on a goal by freshman Jonathan Roy at 5:58 of the opening period, but Cheverus countered with a Bryan Lavoie goal late in the first period and got second-period goals by Arthur and Jonathan Anton to extend its lead to 5-1.

Lewiston’s Brandon Girardin closed out the scoring on assists from Jordan Bourgoin and Roy 5:22 into the final period.

Mason St. Hilaire made 16 saves on 18 shots for Cheverus. Nick Langlais made 10 saves on 15 shots for Lewiston before being replaced by Brian Nason, who stopped all 11 shots he faced.
