Teens Who Care Awards
The 2005 Teens Who Care Awards will be presented to seven Maine young people for outstanding service to their communities:
. Barbara St. Peter, Old Town. She is involved in Pathfinders, a hospice agency and support group for grieving children.
. Brandon Giberson, Bingham. He volunteers at Redington-Fairview General Hospital and is a longtime participant in a smoking prevention program for grade school children.
. Ryan Crane, Mechanic Falls.
. Katharine Farrell, Portland.
. Katherine Dickey, Camden.
. Hannah Dunphy, South Portland.
. Daniel Sandberg, Freeport.
The award presentations will be made at a gala event April 11 at the Portland Museum of Art. First lady Karen Baldacci will be the keynote speaker.
WLBZ 2 received 78 nominations from communities across Maine, with seven chosen as the 2005 Teens Who Care. This year’s judges included Shawn Yardley, director of health and welfare for the city of Bangor.
Each of the seven teens will be honored with a short documentary-style “profile” that will debut to the attendees that evening at the museum, to be televised later on WLBZ 2 in the Teens Who Care 2005 show at 7:30 p.m. April 23. Each teen will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship by SuperLoan, sponsor of Teens Who Care 2005. In addition, 30-second “salute” spots will air on WLBZ 2 in May and June.
3 Bands Concert
ORONO – The ninth annual 3 Bands Concert to benefit youth services at The Acadia Hospital will take place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at the Maine Center for the Arts, University of Maine. The event will feature performances by:
. The University of Maine Concert Band, directed by Christopher White.
. The Bucksport High School Band, directed by Mark Neslusan.
. The Brewer Middle School Band, directed by Lanissa Nadeau.
David Shaffer will serve as guest conductor. Shaffer is a teacher and composer with more than 250 compositions and arrangements in print. His works have been performed at clinics and music festivals around the world and placed on several state contest lists. He is in demand for new music reading sessions, music festivals and music education seminars. He is a freelance composer, arranger and clinician, and is part of the music faculty at Miami University in Ohio.
Concert tickets are $6, $3 for students with ID, those under 17 and seniors over the age of 62. Tickets will be available at the door or by calling Eastern Maine Charities at 973-5055. Tickets also may be purchased online at www.acadiahospital.

Junior Miss competition
BANGOR – Tessa Roscoe, a senior and honor roll student at Bangor High School, was first runner-up in the Maine Junior Miss scholarship competition last weekend in Caribou.
Roscoe also received $300 in scholarship awards for being the winner in the scholarship and interview categories.
Among other accomplishments, Roscoe was selected to participate in the National Young Leaders Conference last month in Washington. NYLC is a leadership development program for high school students who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit.
Annual Showcase
BANGOR – Bangor High School will sponsor its 11th Showcase at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, at the school. The focus of the Showcase is to demonstrate opportunities available at a comprehensive high school and to highlight student achievement and talent. It is open to parents and members of the community.
The Showcase will include activities representing each curriculum area, and fine arts performances. The United Technology Center also will exhibit.
A highlight of the Showcase will be a performance of the one-act play “Every Seventeen Minutes the Crowd Goes Crazy” at 8:30 p.m.
Preschool in Eddington
EDDINGTON – Applications for the preschool program for children in Eddington, Clifton and Holden may be picked up 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. weekdays, March 21-April 8, at the Eddington School office.
Orono coffeehouse
ORONO – The Orono High School Diversity Team will sponsor a coffeehouse at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 19, in the school cafeteria, featuring the music of Evergreen, three Maine musicians who play jazz, bluegrass, folk and country.
Tickets for the event are $10. Seating is limited to 200. Some tickets will be available at the door or may be purchased now from Emily Artesani, Sara Cote, Chelsea Castonguay, Ryland Charronsmith, Justine Dyer, Melissa Krassikiff, Emily Palmer, Emily Sypher, Tory Gram, Sam Hallman, Sarah Jason, Cassie Nichols, Mike Perna, Carl White, Shana Goodall or Margot Dale, adviser of the diversity team. Proceeds from the event will benefit Challenge Day, which is held in October at the school.

ORONO – In response to former students who wish to stay connected to classmates and to Orono High School, Jane Van Arsdale, school librarian, has added an alumni page to the Web site. The address is www.orono.u87.k12.me.us/ohs/ohsalumni.htm. The Web site also offers greater communication between the school and parents.
The Web site includes a list of faculty, teachers’ e-mail addresses, pages dealing with guidance, athletics, the school calendar and activities.

Viola Rand School
BRADLEY – The Viola Rand Elementary School will hold kindergarten registration from 8:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at the school. Current kindergarten pupils will not attend school that day.
Maine state law requires that children entering kindergarten should turn 5 years old on or before Oct. 15. Parents should bring a copy of the child’s legal birth certificate (not the hospital copy), immunization records and Social Security card.

LANCASTER, Pa. – Kristina Wihbey, a sophomore art major, earned academic honors at Franklin & Marshall College. She is the daughter of Karen and Frank Wihbey of Orono and a 2003 graduate of Orono High School.
Maine Maritime Academy
CASTINE – Sarah Hudson will be the Propeller Club’s March speaker. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 17, at the Maine Chowder House in Belfast.
Hudson is a well-known figure in both the maritime and medical communities. A Colby College graduate, she has devoted much of her life to training emergency medical personnel who serve on land and at sea. She teaches ship’s medicine classes required of all Maine Maritime undergraduates. She founded the Bagaduce Ambulance Corps of Castine, and has trained countless EMTs who serve across the state.

Video festival
BANGOR – Student scholarships, worth $14,000, to the New England School of Communications will be up for grabs when NESCom selects winners of its first Video Festival for high school students.
The festival theme is “Making a Difference in Your Community.” Categories are 30-second spot, 60-second spot and three-minute minidocumentary. Groups of up to three students may submit in the minidocumentary category.
Entry deadline submission of videotapes to the festival is May 2. Winners will be selected May 13. A Digital Media and Lighting Seminar for festival winners will be held May 20 when projects will be viewed and awards given.
