ST. GEORGE – Voters approved a new annual budget earlier this week and elected town officers, but it is too early to tell how tax bills will be affected because the school budget is pending, Town Manager John Falla said Thursday.
Voters should stay tuned to SAD 50 budget meetings, Falla said, because school costs account for 75 percent of the town’s overall costs.
At the polls Monday, Frederic Carey and Terrence Driscoll ran unopposed for two three-year selectmen seats. They were elected with 188 and 176 votes, respectively.
Incumbent SAD 50 Director Sue Ferra was re-elected with 24 write-in votes. She had not filed candidate papers by the deadline.
A harbor ordinance was approved, as well as an interlocal agreement and a management ordinance, both for the Georges River regional shellfish group.
At Tuesday’s town meeting, voters approved the full warrant, which included a $1.8 million municipal budget and the purchase and sale of several properties.
The new municipal budget is roughly $1,826,571, which reflects a 1.8 percent increase over the current year. The portion of that to be raised from property taxes is $935,571, up 2.6 percent from 2004. Anticipated revenues are $891,000, up 1 percent.
The current property tax rate is $10.20 per $1,000 of assessed value.
During the session, taxpayers agreed to buy an eight-acre parcel from resident James Skoglund. It is across Route 131 from the Andrew Robinson Homestead near Wiley’s Corner.
The property runs to the St. George River near Fort Point State Park. The conservation commission plans to create a trail from Jones Brook to the river.
The land was appraised in October 2002 at $245,000, according to Falla, and is assessed at $115,000. Residents voted to pay no more than $245,000.
Voters also agreed to sell land.
The old Port Clyde fire station near the Harpoon Restaurant will be sold and the proceeds will go toward building a storage building behind the new fire station on Route 131.
A separate article to raise $50,000 for the project also was passed. The old fire station is assessed at $34,300.
