GUILFORD – Firefighters were quick to extinguish a fire Friday in a small barn off Route 15.

Damage from the 9 a.m. fire was confined mostly to the upper half story of a barn owned by Walter Mayo Jr., according to Fire Chief Mike Nichols.

Nichols said the cause of the fire was connected to a wood stove.

Mayo told fire officials that he built a fire in the wood stove in the barn before he left to go to Dover-Foxcroft.

Nichols praised the quick response of firefighters, including those from Sangerville and Dover-Foxcroft, who provided aid at the scene, and Monson firefighters, who remained on standby at the Guilford station.
