BANGOR – The Maine Gambling Control Board will conduct a meeting next week in Bangor, which is poised to become the site of Maine’s first racetrack casino.

Municipal officials from Greater Bangor, area legislators and county officials have been invited to attend the meeting, which will begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 23, in the council chambers on the third floor of City Hall.

The meeting, which is expected to last an hour, is open to the public and will be broadcast over the cable access government channel, which can be seen on Adelphia’s Channel 7.

The state gambling panel is processing Penn National Gaming Inc.’s application for a state slots license, which it needs in order to develop a $75 million gaming facility near Bangor Raceway. Construction is slated to begin in late spring or early summer.

During the session, Robert Welch, the gambling board’s executive director, and Maine State Police Lt. Thomas Kelly, who is assigned to the unit, will give an update on Penn National’s application process aimed at opening a racino at Bangor Raceway.

They also will review the background investigation and licensing criteria, and respond to a number of frequently asked questions about the project.
