Richard helps Black Bears salvage split in twinbill

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Steve Richard pitched a three-hit shutout, striking out nine and walking two, as the Maine Black Bears won the second game 2-0 to split a nonleague baseball doubleheader against Monmouth University on Saturday.

The Hawks won the opener 8-7.

Sunday’s game was called in the fifth inning because of rain and will not be made up.

In the second game, sophomore righthander Richard (2-0) turned in a dominating performance.

UMaine scored the only run it would need in the second inning against loser Vince Grande (1-2). Matt McGraw singled with one out and raced to third when the center fielder misplayed the ball.

Freshman Frank Pesanello followed with an RBI single.

The Bears added a run in the sixth when Joe Hough hit a on-eout single, advanced on a groundout and scored on Joel Barrett’s double to center field.

Nick Massari singled twice for Monmouth.

In Saturday’s opener, the hosts scored twice in the eighth to gain the margin of victory. With two out, reliever Troy Martin walked Fran Rotella and Massari and was lifted in favor of Scott Robinson.

The runners moved up on a wild pitch, then Cipriano Apicelli stroked a two-run single to center.

Massari doubled and singled for the Hawks and Mike Hussa singled twice. Monmouth chased Bears starter Greg Norton, who allowed five hits, four earned runs and three walks in three innings.

Ryan Quintal paced UMaine with a home run, a double and two singles good for three RBIs. Mike Ferriggi homered and singled, while Barrett doubled and singled.

Quintal hit a two-run home run with Barrett (double) aboard in the fifth, then Ferriggi homered with one out in the sixth to make it 5-5.

Monmouth regained the lead in the sixth on Hussa’s squeeze bunt, but UMaine went back on top in the seventh. Barrett singled with one out, Quintal rapped an RBI double and Smith hit an RBI single with two out.

At Bristol, R.I. Saturday, Tip Fairchild scattered four hits and struck out 15 in eight innings as the Huskies of Gorham won their season opener.

Max Arsenault hit a two-run homer and Fairchild an RBI triple for Southern Maine.

Andrew Dillion hit a solo homer for Roger Williams.

At Clearwater, Fla., Jason Harvey hit a two-run double to key a seven-run, second-inning rally as the Eagles rolled past nationally ranked Ripon.

Sean Brawn and Billy Kane each had a two-run single in the second for Husson of Bangor, which won its last three games of its Florida trip, finishing the at 5-9.

Brawn added another RBI single while Chris McInnis had four singles and two RBIs. Kyle Mathieu and Adam Sheehan notched three singles apiece while Justin Spencer tripled and scored two runs.

John Dunlavy had three singles and Tyler Haddock two for Ripon College.

At Norfolk, Va. Saturday, Megan Myles led a balanced attack with 16 points as the University of Southern Maine Huskies captured the Division III third-place game.

Ashley Marble tossed in nine points while Katie Sibley and Donna Cowing chipped in with eight apiece for the winners.

Tara Gemmel paced Scranton with 12 points and Taryn Mellody added 10.

Black Bears swept on Sunday

At Hempstead, N.Y. the Black Bears capped a 1-3 weekend with Sunday losses to Seton Hall, 7-1, and Hofstra, 4-2 in eight innings.

In Sunday’s first game, Megan Meyer pitched a three-hitter, striking out 13 and walking two to pace the Pirates.

Lauren Dulkis had two singles for the Bears behind loser Candace Jaegge (1-4).

Katie Pierce poked two doubles and a single for Seton Hall.

In Sunday’s finale, the Pride scored three runs in the top of the eighth to edge the Bears.

As per NCAA extra-inning rules, Tara Ulrich was placed at second base to start the Hofstra eighth. Kelly Morris laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached on an error. That set the stage for Laura Sweeney’s two-run triple that made it 3-2.

Dulkis posted two singles and an RBI for UMaine, while loser Sarah Bennis (2-5) added a single and an RBI.

Maine splits Saturday games

At Hempstead, N.Y. on Saturday, Lauren Dulkis’ RBI double in the fourth broke a 1-1 tie and propelled the Black Bears to victory over Seton Hall in the first of two games.

In the second game, Hofstra edged UMaine 2-1.

Saturday morning, Erin Provost rapped two doubles and a single to pace the Bears.

Lauren Dulkis knocked in two runs with a double and a single to back winner Sarah Bennis, who scattered six hits.

Caitlin White singled twice for Seton Hall.

Saturday afternoon, the Pride scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past UMaine.

Pam Dreslinski hit a double and two singles for Hofstra. Lisa Wambold hit a solo home run and Stefanie Kenney added an RBI single in the sixth.

Sarah Bennis went the distance for the Bears, scattering six hits and striking out five. Jess Brady doubled for UMaine.
