Clifton elects 2 new selectmen

CLIFTON – Residents elected Robert DeChaine and write-in candidate Julie Clewley as selectmen on Saturday at the annual town meeting.

Incumbent John Senter withdrew his name from the election before the vote. The new selectmen earned a three-year term.

Residents approved all 32 articles with which they were presented, except one, Administrative Assistant Janice Tutt said Monday.

“They did not pass the $1,500 for the comprehensive plan,” she said.

The Penobscot County assessment, which increased by nearly $10,000 from $43,916 for 2004 to $53,098 for 2005, was the biggest jump in costs for Clifton residents.

To offset taxes, voters approved transferring $68,326 from the revenue sharing account and moving $120,000 from the unappropriated surplus. Residents also endorsed a rewritten board of appeals ordinance, an amended shoreland zone ordinance and several new 911 addresses.

At the annual town meeting, residents also:

. Moved $350 from the snowmobile registration refund fund to the Clifton Area Snowmobile Club for municipal trail development and safety issues.

. Transferred $10,000 from unappropriated surplus account to make the final payment toward an SAD 63 loan used to build the salt shed.

. Set aside $5,000 in unappropriated surplus funds for emergencies.

. Endorsed three-year contracts for necessary services.

. Approved $106,011 for town expenses, administrative salaries and town office expenses; $14,500 for professional services; $17,450 for fire hydrants, streetlights and fire protection through the town of Eddington; $75,000 for winter road and general road maintenance; $42,000 for waste disposal; and $6,605 in general assistance-club-organization allocations.

Copies of the updated and amended ordinances are available at the town office.

Correction: An article published Tuesday in the Final edition about Clifton’s annual town meeting should have stated that at the meeting, the town allocated the final payment for a loan against its SAD 63 school account for funds borrowed several years ago for the construction of a salt shed.
