ABBOT – A six-year winter road maintenance contract was approved Monday by residents at the annual town meeting.
The lengthy contract is a departure from past practice when three-year contracts were the norm. Farrin Bros. and Smith Inc., the town’s contractor, offered to do the work at an increasing per-mile cost of $2,200 to $2,550 from 2005 through 2011.
Residents also approved the $500 purchase of a small plot at the corner of Gales Road and adopted an ordinance requiring town officials to solicit bids for services and goods costing more than $2,000.
Donations of $100 each were approved for Community Health and Counseling for mental health, Northeast Combat, Eastern Agency on Aging, Penquis Community Action Program, United Cerebral Palsy and Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation. Other donations approved were $150 for the Kiwanis Club of Guilford, $200 for Womancare and $300 for Pine Tree Hospice. No funds were given to the American Red Cross and Community Health and Counseling for health services.
The 55 people who attended re-elected Lorraine Leeman as town clerk, tax collector and constable and Alice Weymouth as treasurer. Raymond Morse was elected selectman. He received 30 votes to Roger Packard’s 22 votes. Donna Runnels was elected a SAD 4 director. She received 29 votes while her opponent, John Patterson, received seven votes.
