Bangor police are searching for the robber who knocked down a pedestrian on Broadway Wednesday night and fled with the woman’s backpack.
Police found the woman facedown in the snow near the Interstate 95 overpass. A K-9 unit arriving shortly after the call came in tracked the assailant to the Broadway Shopping Center, Bangor police Lt. Mark Hathaway said late Wednesday night.
The 37-year-old woman was walking on Broadway about 7:50 p.m. near the Jiffy Print store when the robber came up from behind and grabbed at her backpack, Hathaway said. The woman resisted.
“They struggled, and at some point she was thrown down to the ground,” Hathaway said.
Authorities believe the suspect was a man with blond hair. He was described as about 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall. He was wearing a dark-colored jacket with a red stripe across the back, according to police.
Hathaway said the woman suffered cuts and abrasions but it wasn’t clear what her condition was later that night. An investigator with the police department’s criminal investigation division spoke to the woman Wednesday night, Hathaway said.
Five officers and a K-9 were involved in the investigation. Officers could be seen with flashlights scanning the area between Jiffy Print and the overpass through the evening.
The robbery occurred on a heavily traveled road, and Hathaway said that anyone with information or who saw something, including the suspect in the area, can call the Bangor Police Department at 947-7384.
Called to a North Main Street apartment early Monday morning for a report of a fight, Brewer police arrested two men wanted on warrants as well as other charges.
Inside, the apartment was a mess, with furniture moved around and broken glass and other items on the floor, said Brewer police Sgt. Jason Moffitt.
Michael Kelley, 23, of Corinth had blood on his face but was deemed the aggressor with his girlfriend and he was charged with assaulting her, the sergeant said. Authorities learned that Kelley was wanted on at least four warrants from Hancock and Washington counties.
Concerned that others may be elsewhere in the home, possibly hurt, Moffitt checked upstairs and in one bedroom found another man pressed up against the wall, apparently trying to hide. That man, Terry Sibley, 51, of Bangor and Old Town turned out to be wanted on a warrant and was arrested. Police found in one of his pockets generic Ritalin pills, and he was charged with possession of Schedule W drugs.
Kelley was charged with refusing to submit to arrest after he kicked Brewer police Officer Roger Hershey in the knee as the officer was taking the Corinth man out to the cruiser.
