All Saints Catholic School

BANGOR – Sixth-grader Lucas Desjardins was named the statewide winner in the writing contest sponsored by the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Maine. He will be honored at a luncheon in Bangor in May when he will be presented with $100 for his writing effort.

Asa Adams School

ORONO – Pupils of the Asa Adams School will be partners in the Orono Community Garden project, now entering its second year of growing and providing fresh organic fruits and vegetables to low-income senior citizens in Orono. The children will grow seedlings in the school greenhouse.

The partnership will be celebrated at a community garden party 1-3 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at the Asa Adams School. Activities will include raffles, a cafe, crafts, music and information about volunteering in the garden. A sliding scale donation will be accepted at the door. Proceeds will benefit the Orono Community Garden. To obtain more information, call 866-3291.

Brewer Middle School

BREWER – Brewer Middle School eighth-graders will hold a clothing sale 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, March 26, at the Brewer Middle School Gym. The sale will benefit Brewer Special Olympics Athletes.

Middle school students are conducting a clothing drive and are accepting garments of all sizes and seasons for the sale, including shoes and athletic apparel. Collection will continue until March 26. The classroom or school group that collects the largest number of items will win $100 to use as they choose.

To donate clothing for the sale, to arrange for clothing pickup or for more information, call Nancy Snowdeal at 989-8640. Clothing also may be dropped off at the middle school.

Challenger Learning Center

BANGOR – In 2004, President Bush proposed a Vision for Space Exploration that includes robotic and piloted missions to the moon and Mars; Congress recently appropriated funds for the initiative.

Challenger Learning Center of Maine in Bangor has been selected to participate in a special biomedicine program for K-12 students and awarded a grant to support the endeavor. The center was one of seven chosen to receive a grant. The others are in Colorado, Alaska, Texas, Indiana, Florida and New Jersey.

With the program, students and teachers will be able to experience space biomedical research at the Challenger Learning Center of Maine. A series of teacher workshops will be held beginning Thursday, Aug. 18. The cost is $20. To obtain more information, call the center at 990-2900.

Old Town High School

OLD TOWN – Old Town High School’s Class of 2005 keeps busy, under the guidance of class adviser Stan Peterson. They have organized a trip to Boston on a Cyr Bus coach for April 2. The trip includes seats to the award-winning musical “Phantom of the Opera,” time to explore Boston in the Quincy Market area and dinner at Hilltop on the way home.

Pickup time in both Old Town and Bangor begins at 7 a.m. Cost is $140 per person, and a few seats are left.

. The Class of 2005 also held a Longaberger Basket Bingo at the Elks Club, with 173 people attending. Profits from the event go toward the senior class trip to Orlando, Fla., to visit Disney World, Busch Gardens and Universal Studios.

Reeds Brook Middle School

HAMPDEN – Reeds Brook Middle School will sponsor a Scrap-A-Thon from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 2, in the school cafeteria. The cost is $20, $10 for students. Workshops will be conducted by four vendors. The day’s activities will include door prizes and giveaways. Proceeds from the event will benefit the eighth-grade outdoor Maine studies camping trip. Maine Job Corps Day

BANGOR – Gov. John Baldacci’s office will proclaim Maine Job Corps Day on Friday, March 24, in recognition of Job Corps’ contributions to the state of Maine and to the United States of America.

Penobscot Job Corps Center in Bangor and Loring Job Corps Center in Limestone are the two Job Corps centers in Maine. Both are operated by Training and Development Corp. in Bucksport.

A representative from the governor’s office will be at the Job Corps Center in Bangor at 10 a.m. Thursday to make the proclamation at the school’s recreation center.

The announcement will launch the beginning of Job Corps’ 25th anniversary and an open house on the same day. The open house will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in conjunction with National Job Corps’ 40th anniversary celebration.

Open house visitors will have an opportunity to meet center staff, learn about vocational offerings, take a guided tour, win door prizes, see vocational demonstrations by students, enjoy a buffet luncheon provided by culinary arts students, meet with career advisers for a free career assessment, and receive tips for college preparation and financial aid.

The governor’s proclamation cited Penobscot Job Corps for making “a significant contribution to the employment work force in Maine for more than 25 years by graduating 300 students annually.”

State Skills USA

BANGOR – The Penobscot Job Corps Center was one of three host sites on March 18 when hundred of students from across Maine converged in Bangor for the State Skills USA competition.

The annual State Skills USA Competition awards students for employment preparation in a variety of occupations. Students are awarded gold, silver and bronze medals based upon performance. Gold medal winners advance to the National Skills USA Competition in Kansas City, Mo., June 19-24.

Last year Job Corps sent eight students to the national competition and brought home one gold medal.

Hartwick College

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Ashley Smyth, a senior, has been named to the dean’s list for the fall term at Hartwick College. An English major, Smyth has participated in women’s JV field hockey, women’s varsity lacrosse, Society of Sisters United, Hilltops student newspaper, Pluralism Associates League for Students and Orchesis Dance Club. She is the daughter of Wallace and Anne Smyth of Orono.

Maine Maritime Academy

CASTINE – Richard Collenburg Jr. of Eddington was named to the dean’s list at Maine Maritime Academy. Collenburg, a member of the Class of 2007, is majoring in marine systems engineering. He is a graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School in Bangor.

Steven Case of Bangor was named to the dean’s list at Maine Maritime Academy. A member of the Class of 2005, he is majoring in marine transportation operations. He is a graduate of Bangor High School.

Robert Canning of Eddington was named to the dean’s list at Maine Maritime Academy. Canning is a member of the Class of 2008 majoring in power engineering technology. He is a graduate of Brewer High School.

Dwayne Judkins of Holden was named to the dean’s list for at Maine Maritime Academy. A member of the Class of 2005, Judkins is majoring in power engineering technology. He is a graduate of John Bapst Memorial High School.

MMA Drama Club

CASTINE -The Maine Maritime Academy Drama Club will present the musical, “Into The Woods,” by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. The musical will be staged at 6:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, March 31, April 1 and 2, in Delano Auditorium, Leavitt Hall, on campus.

The production is directed by Jessica Marsh, Greenfield, N.H., a member of the Class of 2005. Myles Block, Arlington, Va., a member of the Class of 2006, serves as assistant director. The performance is free, but donations are welcome. The public is encouraged to attend.

UMaine Farmington

FARMINGTON – The University of Maine at Farmington has announced its academic achievement list for the fall 2004 semester. Students ranking in the top quarter of all grade-point averages are named to the list. High honor students were required to rank 3.8 and above and honor students 3.4 and above.
