CLEARWATER, Fla. – Tip Fairchild hit two doubles to drive in a run and help lead the University of Southern Maine to a 3-0 college baseball win over Allegheny in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday. Allegheny won the second game 12-2 in five innings.
In the first game, Peter Bergeron gave up just two hits and three walks while striking out one to earn the shutout win for the Huskies. Brandon Brewer doubled and Joe Ganley had two RBIs.
Jon Schmitt gave up five hits and two earned runs for the Gators while striking out three through six innings.
In the second game, Evan VonLeer hit a two-run homer in the second inning for Allegheny, and Matt Young hit three singles and drove in three runs.
Max Arsenault and Nick Vardaro each doubled for the Huskies.

At Fort Myers, Fla., Caitlin Stivaletta hit a one-out RBI single into right field in the eighth inning to give the University of Southern Maine the 4-3 win over Edgewood College in the second game of a doubleheader. Union College blanked USM 10-0 in the first game.
In the first game, Julie Gawronski hit a double and a home run to knock in three runs for Union.
Evon Hudspeth tripled for Southern Maine’s only hit.
In the second game, Caterina Riitano tripled and singled with two RBIs for the Huskies, and Whitney Westman had a triple and an RBI.
Jennifer Stephens singled twice for Edgewood.
