Mr., Miss Basketball honors to be awarded tonight

BANGOR – Six basketball players who led their teams to a collective 121-7 record, three state championships and four regional titles will vie for the titles of Mr. and Miss Maine Basketball to be announced tonight.

Those announcements will highlight the 25th annual Maine McDonald’s All-Star Games banquet that begins at 7 p.m. at Husson College’s Newman Gymnasium.

The banquet kicks off the final weekend of high school basketball activity for the 2004-05 season, with 80 of the state’s top senior players scheduled to participate in four all-star games that begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Tyler Emmons of Portland, Tim Stammen of Camden Hills of Rockport, and Ben Thayer of Gorham are finalists for the Mr. Basketball Award, while Alexa Kaubris of Dirigo of Dixfield, Whitney Morrow of South Portland, and Katie Rollins of Cony of Augusta are the Miss Basketball candidates.

According to the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches, which administers the awards, the Mr. and Miss Basketball Award is presented each year to the senior player who has exhibited outstanding skills throughout his or her career, has made a significant impact on his or her team, has demonstrated respect for the game through leadership on and off the court, has epitomized the values of sportsmanship and has been a positive school and community citizen.

Each MABC-member coach may nominate candidates but not from their own teams. The top 10 candidates are sent on to a five-person selection committee made up of three media members and two retired coaches – with separate committees for Mr. and Miss Basketball. Each selection committee determines three finalists and continues the evaluation process through the end of the Class A tournament before the winner is selected.

Here’s a look at the finalists:

. Emmons led Portland to a 17-3 record and a berth in the Western A semifinals. The 2005 Maine Gatorade player of the year and Southern Maine Activities Association player of the year, Emmons averaged better than 17 points and 12 rebounds per game for the Bulldogs. A three-year starter, the 6-foot-5 forward also played a key role as Portland won the 2004 Class A state championship, and he finished his career as the Bulldogs’ all-time rebounding leader.

. Stammen led Camden Hills to the 2005 Class B state title. With a 22-0 record, the Windjammers were the only undefeated boys team in the state. The KVAC all-star averaged 13.7 points during the regular season, then was named MVP of the Eastern B tourney before scoring 29 points in Camden Hills’ overtime win over Gorham in the state final. The 6-3 Stammen also helped the Windjammers win the 2002 state title while compiling a four-year varsity record of 77-7.

. Thayer led Gorham to the 2005 Western Maine Class B championship, averaging 20 points per game for the 19-3 Rams. The 6-3 forward surpassed 1,000 career points as a senior while helping Gorham win its third regional title in his four years on the varsity. During Thayer’s career, Gorham compiled a 72-14 record. Thayer plans to attend Bates College next fall.

. Kaubris led Dirigo to a 22-0 record and the 2005 Class C state title, averaging 17 points, four steals, and four assists for the Cougars. During her four years at Dirigo, the Cougars compiled a 87-1 record with three state titles and four Western C crowns. The 5-7 forward is a two-time Mountain Valley Conference player of the year as well as a two-time Western C tourney MVP. A 1,000-point scorer, Kaubris will play at Bowdoin College next fall.

. Morrow sparked South Portland to the No. 1 seed in Western A, a 19-1 record, and a berth in the regional semifinals. The 5-10 forward averaged 16 points per game and has been named the 2005 Maine Gatorade player of the year. Morrow is South Portland’s schoolgirl career scoring leader, and she also is the current Southern Maine champion for the McDonald’s free-throw contest that will be decided Saturday.

. Rollins led Cony to a 22-0 record and the 2005 Class A state championship. A four-year starter and two-year captain, the 6-2 center is the leading scorer in Cony history. She also was the 2004 Maine Gatorade player of the year after leading the Rams to the Eastern Maine championship as a junior. Rollins, a two-time Eastern A tourney MVP, will play at Harvard University next season.
