Fairchild triple powers USM to split vs. Trinity

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Tip Fairchild’s bases-loaded triple in the fourth inning gave the University of Southern Maine Huskies the only runs they’d need as they won the second game of a college baseball doubleheader 3-2 over Trinity Friday afternoon.

Trinity took the opener 15-4.

In the second game, Josh Armandi and Fairchild scattered two runs on six hits for the Huskies of Gorham, with Fairchild pitching the seventh for the save.

Matt Engster and Andrew Fries each had an RBI single for the Bantams.

In the opener, Trinity sent 14 men to the plate in a 10-run third inning which put the game away early.

Fries launched a bases-loaded double, which plated three runs to key the attack for the Bantams, and Engster added a two-run single later in the inning.

Brandon Brewer had a double and a single for the Huskies.

USM wins one, loses one

At Fort Myers, Fla., Evon Hudspeth’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Southern Maine Huskies of Gorham to a 2-1 win over Wisconsin-Whitewater in the first game of a doubleheader.

Lawrence University defeated USM 4-0 in the second game.

In the first game, Melissa Henderson went the distance, scattering one run on three hits while striking out seven and walking none for Southern Maine. Hudspeth also scored on a passed ball in the fourth.

In the second game, Lawrence’s Lauren Kost pitched a three-hit shutout, and the victors jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first.

Becca Reason paced the Vikings with two doubles and a pair of RBIs.

Katie Mainville pitched four strong innings for the Huskies with nine strikeouts after relieving starter Caterina Riitano in the fourth.
