Last of 133rd soldiers returning to Maine

Members of the 133rd Engineer Battalion will be home in time to have Easter dinner with their families.

Although most of the 500 members of the battalion returned home earlier this month, a group of 22 soldiers stayed behind in Kuwait to catalog and then load the unit’s equipment onto a ship.

Those soldiers are expected to arrive today in Maine, National Guard spokesman Maj. Peter Rogers said Friday.

The remaining 22 members of the 133rd arrived earlier this week at Fort Drum, N.Y., to undergo the demobilization process, which includes medical and dental screening, filling out paperwork and cataloging equipment.

During their approximately one-year deployment to Iraq, the soldiers provided humanitarian relief to Iraqi people and constructed schools, health clinics and other facilities.

The group was expected to leave New York at 10 p.m. Friday and arrive at the Westbrook Armory around 8 a.m. today.

A 15-to-20 minute stop is expected at each of the following armories to drop off soldiers before proceeding: Westbrook Armory, Stevens Avenue Armory in Portland, Lewiston Armory and Belfast Armory.
