Maine wins two of three games

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Joe Hough hit a triple, double, and single to drive in two runs and help lead the University of Maine to the 8-4 win over Harvard University Saturday in the first game of a baseball doubleheader. The Black Bears also won the second game 11-3 over the New York Institute of Technology but fell to NYIT Sunday 14-4.

In Saturday’s first game, Ryan Quintal doubled and singled to drive in two runs for the Black Bears. Curt Smith and Ross Cantara each added a double and a single. Aaron Izaryk and Mike Ferriggi both had two singles and scored two runs.

Matt Vance and Zak Farkas each doubled and singled for Harvard.

In Saturday’s second game, Joel Barrett hit a home run and a single to drive in two runs for Maine as Ryan Quintal. Steve Gambale, Smith, and Cantara each had three singles with a RBI. Hough singled twice to drive in two runs and Izaryk doubled to knock in a run.

Mike Kenefick singled four times for NYIT.

In Sunday’s game, David Johnson powered NYIT with a double and three singles to knock in two runs.

Matt McGraw scored two runs on two singles for the Black Bears and Mike Ferriggi hit a RBI double in the second inning. Iazaryk and Barrett each singled twice and scored a run.

Southern Maine splits

At Clearwater, Fla., Rich McGraw hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to help lead the University of Southern Maine to the 9-7 win over Albright College in the first game on Saturday. Trinity College beat the Huskies 15-2 in the second game.

In the first game, Max Arsenault hit two doubles and a single to drive in a run for the Huskies and Tip Fairchild added a double and two singles with a RBI.

In the second game, Erik Paisley hit three singles to drive in three runs for Trinity as Jeffrey Natale had a double with three RBIs.

Brandon Brewer hit two singles for the Huskies.

Southern Maine splits

At Fort Myers, Fla., Melissa Henderson struck out the first eight batters she faced to tally 14 strikeouts, no runs, one walk, and one hit to lead USM past Thomas 3-0 in the first game Saturday’s first game, while the Huskies lost the second game to Buffalo State College 2-1.

In the first game, Caterina Riitano hit a RBI double in the third inning and Melissa Brown had two singles with a RBI for Southern Maine. Dawn Ross hit two singles.

In the second game, Brooke Matheis doubled for Buffalo State.

Christen Lachapelle doubled and singled to knock in a run for the Huskies and Kim Lipman hit a triple.

Maine men, women open

At Annapolis, Md., the University of Maine men opened the season scoring 124 points for a second-place finish in a four-team invitational meet hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy, while the women racked up 79 points to take third in the five-team meet.

Navy won both meets.

For the women, Stephanie McCusker won the only event for the Black Bears, going 11.08 meters in the triple jump. Lindsay Burlock was second in the 400 meters in 59.26. In the 800 meters, Hana Pelletier was second with a time of 2:13.61. Silvia Scaldaferri was fourth in the 100 meters with a time of 13.21, while Heather Jovanelli was third in the 1,500 meters in 4:47.10.

Kathryn Souviney was third in 15.17 in the 100-meter hurdles and was also second in the javelin at 34.41 meters. Jessica Hudec was third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 12:43.69. The 4 by 100 relay team finished second in 50.32. In the field events, Erin Hatch was third in the high jump, clearing 1.55 meters.

On the men’s side, Anthony Morgan was third in the hammer throw at 46.25 meters and third in the discus at 38.73 meters. Jesse Ludwig was third in the long jump at 6.41 meters. Kenneth Savary was second in the triple jump, going 13.07 meters. Christopher Warren was third at 1.84 meters in the high jump. Ivi Nwosu was third in the 200 meters with a time of 22.32 and was also third in the 100 meters at 11.14.

Lacrosse

MMA 9, Daniel Webster 1

At Castine, Nate Dennen scored three goals to help lead the Mariners past Daniel Webster Saturday.

Jake Forgit had a goal and two assists for the 1-0 Mariners as Nate Bolduc and Garrett Hutchins each had a goal and an assist. Luke McPartlin, Tim Boorman, and Dustin Webber all scored a goal. Roscoe Bischop made 11 saves.

Steve Smith scored 0-1 Daniel Webster’s only goal. Gabe Berthiaume stopped 13 shots.
